Pongola is surrounded by 50 km? of sugar cane subtropical fruit plantations. The town thrived as a result of the irrigation (canal) system and a sugar mill. Pongola is situated in a tranquil subtropical environment and normally received about 519 mm of rain per year, with most rainfall in summer.
