INSTRUCTIONS TO MARKERS

1. Candidates are required to answer ALL the questions.

2. These marking guidelines have been finalised at a marking guideline
discussion session at DBE at which provinces were represented. Any
omissions or queries should be referred to Chief Markers/Internal Moderators
at marking centres. All protocol must be followed.

3. Candidates' responses should be assessed as objectively as possible.

MARKING THE COMPREHENSION

 Because the focus is on understanding, incorrect spelling and language errors in
responses should not be penalised unless such errors change the
meaning/understanding. (Errors must still be indicated.)

 If a candidate uses words from a language other than the one being examined,
disregard those words, and if the answer still makes sense, do not penalise.
However, if a word from another language is used in a text and required in an
      answer, this will be acceptable.

 For open-ended questions, no marks should be awarded for YES/NO or I
AGREE/I DISAGREE. The reason/substantiation/motivation is what should be
      considered.

 When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole sentence,
mark correct provided that the correct word is underlined/highlighted.

 When two/three facts/points are required and a range is given, mark only the first
      two/three.

 Accept dialectal variations.

 For multiple-choice questions, accept BOTH the letter corresponding with the
correct answer AND/OR the answer written out in full.

1.7 Washing the jeans releases microfibres into the ocean thus polluting
                     it.
10 000 litres of water go into the manufacturing of a single pair of jeans
                     thereby reducing water resources.
The fuel used in the shipping and delivery of the jeans contributes to
                     pollution.
                                                                                                      (2)
NOTE: Accept any TWO of the above answers.

1.8 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
          Yes.
The manufacturing process results in water pollution and the amount of water
used leads to the exhaustion of valuable resources. The pollution caused by
dumping and overconsumption is devastating as rubbish dumps will be filled.
If consumers do not change their behaviour as soon as possible, it will be too
late to save the environment as the problem will escalate and resources will
          disappear.

                                                    OR

          No.
There are other factors that have a more devastating impact. The
environmental impact of the fashion industry provides no immediate threat to
humans. The fashion industry provides employment which contributes to the
economy and thus outweighs any possible negative impact.

NOTE: Accept other suitable answers. A candidate can score 1 mark for an
answer that is not well substantiated. Accept a combination answer. (2)

1.9 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.

The title is suitable because it is linked to the passage that
discusses the negative effects of fast fashion on the environment.
Footprints are what one leaves behind. According to the passage,
fashion manufacturing leaves both negative and positive footprints.

                                                         OR

The title is not suitable because it could be misunderstood if one
reads it out of context. It could also be difficult to understand how
fashion could possibly leave a 'footprint'.

NOTE: Accept other suitable answers. A candidate can score 1 mark for an
answer that is not well substantiated. Accept a combination answer. (2)

1.13 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.

          Yes.
The pie graphs depict the percentage of water used for different purposes in
five continents. They clearly show that some continents use more water for
industrial purposes while others use more water for farming or domestic
          purposes.

The pie graphs do not convey a relevant message. Not everyone can easily
analyse pie graphs/charts. Written words would have conveyed the
          information more effectively.

The visual of the animal encircled by flames creates sympathy and could
encourage people to be cautious about starting veld fires. They could also
report veld fires thus protecting the animals from potential harm.
                                                  OR
           No.
There is no clear link between the visual of the animal and the advertisement.
It is an animated drawing and not a picture of a real animal. People like
hunters would not be sympathetic towards the animal. No animals are
mentioned in the written text of the advertisement.
NOTE: Do not award a mark for Yes or No. The above are merely
examples. A candidate can score 1 mark for an answer that is not
well substantiated. Accept a combination answer. (2)
                                                                                                  [10]

Jon tickles Garfield. However, Garfield does not like being tickled (for too
