SECTION A: COMPREHENSION

QUESTION 1

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

DEALING WITH DEBT

1 For most people the first few months of a new year
can be a scary time financially. You've probably
blown your year-end budget over Christmas and New
Year and are trying desperately to climb out of the
debt trap. The good news is that getting out of debt is
easier than you think: you just need to commit
yourself to a sensible budget and debt management plan.

2 Fiona Minton, a financial fitness consultant and co-founder of Financial
Fitness Consulting, says that basic budgeting is the key to getting yourself out
of debt. She further says that now is the best time to start.

3 Fiona gives the following guidelines to set up a budget:

e Use past figures of income and expenses to estimate your monthly budget
for the coming year. Take enough time and list your income and
expenses.

e Some expenses and income items are seasonal or irregular, e.g. going on
holiday. Take the annual amount spent on such items and divide it by
twelve to find a monthly cost.

e One of your regular expense items should be payments into a savings or
investment account. A good minimum savings goal is 10-15% of your total
income. The importance of this step cannot be stressed enough. Given
enough time, it can bring you the financial independence everyone dreams
of.

e When you have listed all your income and expenses, add up your income
and add up your expenses. Your income should add up to more than your
expenses so that you have a cushion for unforeseen expenses. If your
expenditure is more than your income you need to work on curbing your
expenses.

e If you are spending more than you earn, your budget should help you
identify where you can cut back. Remove all those items that you don't
need or can reduce cost on like cellphone bills, expensive clothes and fast
foods.

You need to bank wisely. Considering that bank charges at South African
banks are among the highest in the world, you need to be smart and find the
kind of account and bank that best suits your needs. Did you know that many
banks offer free banking if you keep your balance above a certain level
throughout the month? There are a number of ways that you can save on
bank charges:

e Try to use an ATM for basic banking transactions. This service is often
half the cost that would be charged if you go into the bank.

e Always use your own bank's ATM. Using an ATM of another banking
group can cost up to R10 per transaction.

e Try to limit the number of times you use the ATM. It is cheaper to draw
one large amount than it is to draw smaller amounts more often.

e Make sure that there is enough money in your account when debit orders
go through. If the bank does not honour a payment you pay a heavy fine.

e Always check your bank statements. Mistakes are often made and they
are rarely in your favour.

e There are banks that cater for people who do not earn huge salaries.
These banks offer reasonable fees which will save you a lot of money.

5 Using this advice and not letting debt spiral out of control can mean the
difference between financial independence or years of paying high-interest
loans, which prevents you from saving and being able to build up a cushion of
wealth so that you can finance your own projects.

SECTION B: SUMMARY
QUESTION 2

Read the passage 'ATM crime — how to act streetwise’ and in no more than 50 words
list SEVEN tips to ensure that you are not robbed at an ATM.

INSTRUCTIONS

List SEVEN tips in full sentences.

Number the tips from 1 to 7.

Write only ONE tip per line.

Use your own words as far as possible.

Indicate the number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your
summary.

e You will be penalised for exceeding the maximum number of words or for
failing to indicate the number of words used.

ATM CRIME — HOW TO ACT STREETWISE

For many of us, ATMs represent an easy way of accessing our
money. People using ATMs, however, also attract the attention
of criminals and become easy targets. If you know what to look
out for and what you can do, your hard-earned money will be
safe.

Criminals go to great lengths to obtain people's cards and PIN. Once they have your
PIN and card details they can get their hands on your money. Keeping your PIN and
card safe should be a priority. Be as careful with your card and PIN as you would be
with a large amount of cash.

It is common sense that you should never keep your bank card and PIN together. If
you cannot remember your PIN and have to write it down, keep this number in a very
safe place. Never reveal your PIN to anyone else, not even to family or friends. Should
someone threaten you and ask you for your PIN, give them a wrong number. When
typing in your PIN at the ATM, make sure that you shield the keypad with your body
and your hand.

Always look closely at the ATM before using it; if it seems to have been tampered with,
use another ATM. If the card does not go in smoothly or if something seems to be
blocking the card slot, do not use the machine.

When you have completed your transaction, put away your card, transaction slip and
money before leaving the ATM. Some people walk away counting the money that they
have withdrawn and, in this way, make it easy for thieves to grab the money.

There have been a number of scams where criminals have impersonated bank
employees. Do not allow anyone to 'help' you draw money. They may just be after
your cash.

If your card is lost, stolen or swallowed by an ATM machine, inform the bank
immediately so that your card can be stopped. Visit your branch or phone the lost card
number which is usually displayed at the ATM.
