 QUESTION 5

Read the passage below and answer questions that follow.

ARE THEY DRINKING TO THEIR HEALTH?

Many people think that if they control the amount of alcohol they take in, they will
stay in control. This thought is not true. Alcohol is a poisonous substance and
drinking alcohol while pregnant can harm the unborn baby which may result in
Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. This means the unborn babies will have physical
abnormalities. At a function to create awareness about FAS, South Africa was
found to have the worst incidence of FAS in the world. The Western Cape has at
least four times more children affected than elsewhere in the world. It is estimated
that one in ten children in Grade 1 in the Western Cape has FAS. Government
officials also announced that 25% of pregnant women attending clinics are heavy
 drinkers.

(Abridged article from Discovery, Summer 2009 Issue 10)

5.2.2 Write ONE social factor that can affect the child (born of a drinking
mother) negatively as he/she grows up. (1)

5.3 Give TWO possible reasons why there is such a high rate of alcohol
consumption among pregnant women or people in general. (2)

5.4 Explain how the abuse of alcohol can promote the following:

        5.4.1 Unemployment (2)

Cancer/„kaensar/(medical term - malignant neoplasm) is a class of diseases in

 QUESTION 7

                           THREE MEN BEATEN TO DEATH

Three men were beaten to death and another one was badly injured by angry
community members in Flagstaff today, Eastern Cape police said. Captain
Mduduzi Godlwana said there had been a spate of housebreakings in Flagstaff
and the community believed that the four men aged 20 and 25 were responsible.
“The community took them to a soccer field, where they were interrogated,” he
said. The crowd beat the men with sticks and stones, killing three men. Captain
Godlwana said that the fourth was in police custody. A case of murder had been
opened, but no arrests had been made yet.

QUESTION 9

IS WOMEN’S DAY JUST ANOTHER PUBLIC HOLIDAY?

On 9 August 1956, thousands of South African women of all races marched to the
Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against Pass Laws on African women. Many
years later the democratic government declared this day National Women‟s Day,
to honour women who had protested against these laws. As a child born after
1994, a child who believes in the “Rainbow nation”, you have noticed that many
people, black or white, do not take Women‟s Day very seriously. They treat it as
just as an ordinary day.

You are therefore asked to design and make an invitation brochure that will
encourage everybody to attend the National Women‟s Day celebrations, where
people will come in numbers and learn more about this day and also get time to
enjoy themselves. Include all the relevant details in your invitation brochure. [10]
