SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO MARKERS
 • Revisit the questions and the marking guidelines frequently during the marking session.
 • Read the entire answer and check that it correlates with the question. Do not focus only
   on keywords.
 • Accept correct answers that are expressed differently, e.g. the marking guidelines state
’slow’ and the candidate responds ’not fast’.
 • In general, ONE mark is awarded per fact. Beware of overlapping answers to a specific
   question.
 • Where a question requires a candidate to LIST or NAME: mark the first number of
answers/facts required, e.g. the first TWO facts if TWO were required, even if presented
   in paragraph format.
 • Questions requiring longer answers must be regarded as a single unit. Marks can be
awarded if correct statements are found anywhere in the answer.
 • The answers below are not exhaustive: accept any other correct and relevant answers.

SECTION B
QUESTION 4: SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGIES

4.1 A device that is connected to/used with the computer (externally) but 2
is NOT part of the core system unit/CPU, e.g. to input, output or
             store data 3
Example: printer, scanner, mouse, keyboard, external hard drive,
             webcam, speakers, data projector 3
 4.2 (1) Lighter/smaller – more portable/easier to carry in a taxi 2
             (2) Longer battery life
             (3) Touch screen – can be used while standing/without a desk or
             mouse
             (4) Switches on instantly/quick to start
             (5) Built-in mobile data (SIM card slot) – can connect to the internet
             without Wi-Fi
             (6) Can be used as an e-book reader
                                                                     33 (Any two)
(Do NOT accept ’cheaper’ on its own.)
4.3 (1) RAM is volatile/loses its contents when the power is switched off; 2
             ROM is non-volatile/keeps its contents
             (2) RAM can be read from and written to; ROM can (normally) only
             be read
             (3) RAM stores the programs and data that are currently being used;
ROM stores the start-up (boot) instructions/firmware
             (4) RAM is usually much larger in capacity than ROM
                                                                     33 (Any two)
(Each difference must refer to both RAM and ROM or clearly imply
             the comparison)
 4.4 Free space: 32 – 9.5 = 22.5 GB 3 3
             22.5 × 1 024 = 23 040 MB 3
             23 040 ÷ 750 = 30.72, therefore 30 complete video clips 3
             (Accept working in GB: 750 MB = 0.732 GB; 22.5 ÷ 0.732 = 30.7 →
             30. Award the last mark ONLY if the answer is rounded DOWN to a
             whole number. CA: if a learner uses 1 GB = 1 000 MB: 22 500 ÷ 750
             = 30 – award 2 out of 3.)
4.5 Operating system: system software that controls/manages the 2
hardware and resources of the computer and provides an interface
between the user and the computer 3
Utility program: system software that performs a specific
maintenance/housekeeping task to keep the computer running well,
e.g. antivirus, disk clean-up, defragmenter, backup, compression 3
 4.6.1 C: (drive) 3 1
 4.6.2 Extension: .xlsx 3 2
             Application: spreadsheet (program) 3
 4.6.3 PAT 3 1
