WORKERS BECOME OWNERS AT FOOD COMPANY

A food-processing company in the Eastern Cape has transferred 25% of
its shares to a trust that represents its 1 400 workers and the surrounding
community. The workers will receive dividends every year, and two trustees
will sit on the board of directors.
The company says the deal will improve its broad-based black economic
empowerment (B-BBEE) score, which will help it to win contracts from
government. Critics warn that such schemes help workers only if the company
stays profitable and if the trust is managed in an open and honest way.

[Examiner’s own – fictitious report for assessment purposes]
3.3.1 Identify the percentage of the company’s shares that was transferred
                to the trust. (1)

3.3.3 Briefly describe the term black economic empowerment (BEE). (2)
3.3.4 Explain why a better B-BBEE score helps the company to win
                government contracts. (2)
3.3.5 How can share schemes such as this one benefit the workers and the
                company? (2 x 2) (4)

        disputes. (2 x 4) (8)
3.5 How can the government improve the economic position of marginalised groups
        in South Africa? (4 x 2) (8)
