BUS DRIVERS’ STRIKE ENDS AFTER THREE WEEKS

Bus drivers in a large metropolitan city returned to work on Monday after a
three-week strike. Their trade union had demanded a wage increase of 12%,
while the employers offered only 5,5%. Conciliation at the CCMA failed, after
which the workers embarked on a protected strike.
Thousands of commuters had to find other, more expensive transport to get
to work and school. The parties finally agreed on a wage increase of 7% for
        the year.

                            GRANTS KEEP FAMILIES AFLOAT

Every month millions of South Africans queue at pay points and shops to
collect their social grants. For many poor households the child support grant
and the old-age grant are the only regular source of income.
Economists warn that social grants reduce hunger but cannot remove poverty
on their own. They argue that more jobs, better education and support for
small businesses are needed so that households can earn their own income.
                                                    [Summary compiled by the examiner]

4.3.4 Explain why social grants alone cannot remove poverty. (2)
4.3.5 How can the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) help to
                reduce poverty? (2 x 2) (4)
