INSTRUCTIONS TO MARKERS
1. Candidates are required to answer ALL the questions.
2. These marking guidelines serve as a guide to markers. Some responses may require
the marker’s discretion; accept any other relevant, well-substantiated answers.
3. Assess candidates’ responses as objectively as possible.

MARKING THE COMPREHENSION
 • Because the focus is on understanding, incorrect spelling and language errors in
responses should not be penalised unless such errors change the meaning. (Errors must
   still be indicated.)
 • If a candidate uses words from a language other than English, disregard those words. If
the answer still makes sense, do not penalise.
 • For open-ended questions, no marks are awarded for YES/NO or I AGREE/I DISAGREE
alone. The reason/substantiation is what should be credited.
 • When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole sentence, mark it
correct provided the correct word is underlined/highlighted.
 • When TWO/THREE facts/points are required and a range is given, mark only the first
   TWO/THREE.
 • For multiple-choice questions, accept BOTH the letter corresponding with the correct
answer AND/OR the answer written out in full.

1.8 She is determined/ambitious/caring/generous/selfless.✓
She is not satisfied with one success; she wants to help even more children
and has already started collecting books for the second container.✓
NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES or NO. A candidate can score 1 mark
for an answer that is not well-substantiated. Accept a combination answer. (2)
1.9 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
Yes. Many children in my community cannot get to a library, and many people
have old books at home that they could donate. The children would have a
safe place to read and do homework.
                                            OR
No. It would be difficult to find a container and a safe place to put it. There may
not be enough volunteers to look after the books.
NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES or NO. A candidate can score 1 mark
for an answer that is not well-substantiated. Accept a combination answer. (2)
1.10 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
The title is suitable. The article is about a library made from a shipping
container (a ‘box’) that is filled with books. The title is short, catchy and creates
         interest.
                                                   OR
The title is not suitable. It only describes the container and not the real
message of the article, which is how one girl changed her community.
NOTE: A candidate can score 1 mark for an answer that is not
         well-substantiated. Accept a combination answer. (2)
1.11 40%✓
         100 learners✓ (40% of 250). (2)
1.12 The learners who read more than five books (10%).✓ (1)
1.13 Yes.
TEXT A shows that there was no place nearby where children could borrow
books, and that children who visit The Book Box are more confident and have
         better reading marks.✓
TEXT B shows that 40% of the learners did not read a single book for fun and
only 10% read more than five books.✓
NOTE: Information from BOTH texts must be used for 2 marks. Do not award
         a mark for YES/NO alone. (2)

          and vegetables can easily become
          tomorrow’s lunch.’
   8. ‘If you have more food than you can 8. Freeze extra food.

QUESTION 3: ANALYSING AN ADVERTISEMENT
3.1 Learners/students/parents of school-going children/people affected by load
         shedding.✓
NOTE: Accept any ONE of the above. (1)
3.2 Literally, ‘dim’ means to make less bright: the lamp gives light so that the dark
(load shedding) does not stop you from seeing/studying at night.✓
Figuratively, a ‘dim future’ is a future without success: if you cannot study
because of the dark, your marks and chances of success will suffer.✓ (2)
3.3 B/made smaller so that it is easy to carry.✓ (1)
3.4 ‘no electricity needed’/‘Charges in the sun’✓ (1)
3.5 To show that the lamp is charged by sunlight/solar power.✓
To show that the lamp works without electricity/during load shedding and that
         sunlight is free.✓
The sun suggests brightness, hope and a positive future.✓
NOTE: Accept any TWO of the above. (2)
3.6 Alliteration✓ (1)
3.7 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
Yes. It would allow me to study during load shedding without paying for
electricity, and I could also charge my phone. It is light enough to carry in
         my schoolbag.
                                              OR
No. R249 is too expensive for my family, and candles or the light on my phone
         are cheaper.
NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES or NO. A candidate can score 1 mark
for an answer that is not well-substantiated. Accept a combination answer. (2)
                                                                                             [10]

QUESTION 4: ANALYSING A CARTOON
4.1 He is rude/disrespectful/impatient/selfish towards her; he thinks his game is
         more important than helping her.✓
He lies back on the couch and keeps his eyes on his phone; he does not even
         look at her.✓
NOTE: Reference to his words AND his body language is required for 2 marks. (2)
4.2 The room is dark.✓
The ceiling light is off/no longer shining.✓
The word ‘CLICK!’ shows that the power has gone off.✓
         Thabo says ‘Load shedding’.✓
NOTE: Accept any TWO of the above. (2)
4.3 B/bored and unhappy.✓ (1)
4.4 Thabo’s phone is dead and there is nothing to distract him✓; now he finally
has time to spend with/listen to his grandmother.✓
NOTE: Accept: She is gently teasing him because he was too busy for her in
         FRAME 1. (2)
4.5 He is laughing (‘Ha ha!’).✓
