SECTION A: COMPREHENSION

QUESTION 1
Read BOTH TEXT A and TEXT B and answer the set questions.
TEXT A
                                          BOOKS IN A BOX
1 When Lerato Dlamini moved to Ivory Park with her grandmother three years ago, she
noticed something strange. There were taverns, hair salons and spaza shops on
almost every corner, but there was not a single place where children could borrow a
book. ‘The nearest public library is two taxi rides away,’ she says. ‘Most families here
cannot afford that every week.’ 5
2 Lerato, who is now sixteen, had always loved reading. Her mother used to read to
her every night, and after her mother passed away, books became her comfort. She
decided that the children of her new neighbourhood deserved the same gift.
3 With the help of her grandmother, she wrote letters to local businesses, asking for an
old shipping container. For months, nobody answered. ‘I almost gave up,’ she admits, 10
‘but my gogo told me that a tree does not grow in a day.’ Finally, the owner of a
building-supply company agreed to donate a container that had been standing empty
      in his yard.
4 Next, Lerato needed books. She posted a short video on social media, asking people
to give away books that they no longer read. Within two weeks, the video had been 15
viewed more than 50 000 times. Boxes of books began to arrive from all over the
country – picture books, novels, dictionaries and even old school textbooks. A group
of retired teachers offered to sort the books and cover them in plastic.
5 Today, the bright yellow container, which the children have named ‘The Book Box’,
stands next to the community hall. It has shelves, a carpet, cushions and 20
solar-powered lights, so it stays open even during load shedding. Every afternoon
from three o’clock until six, it is filled with children who read, do their homework or
listen to stories. On Saturdays, Lerato and her volunteers1 run a reading club for
younger children, who take turns to read aloud.
6 The Book Box has also changed the lives of the volunteers. Seventeen-year-old 25
Tshepo Mokoena, who helps to run the reading club, used to spend his afternoons
hanging around on the street corner. ‘Now I have a reason to stay out of trouble,’ he
says. ‘When a small child reads a whole sentence on her own for the first time, her
face lights up like a Christmas tree. That makes me proud.’
7 Teachers at the local primary school have noticed a difference too. According to the 30
principal, Mrs Nomsa Khumalo, learners who visit The Book Box are more confident
in class, and their reading marks have improved. ‘Reading opens doors,’ she says. ‘A
child who can read well can learn anything.’
8 Lerato is not resting on her success. She hopes to open a second container in a
nearby informal settlement next year, and she has already started collecting books 35
for it. ‘Every child deserves a story,’ she says. ‘If you have a book at home that you
no longer read, please do not throw it away. Somewhere, a child is waiting for it.’

SECTION B: SUMMARY

QUESTION 2
In many South African homes, good food ends up in the rubbish bin.
Read the passage (TEXT C) below and list SEVEN ways in which families can waste less
food.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Your summary must be written in point form.
2. List your SEVEN points in full sentences, using no more than 70 words.
3. Number your sentences from 1 to 7.
4. Write only ONE point per sentence.
5. Use your OWN words as far as possible.
6. Indicate the total number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your
      summary.
TEXT C
DON’T BIN IT – EAT IT!
Every day, families throw away bread that has gone mouldy, vegetables that have gone soft and
leftovers that nobody wanted. This is a waste of money, and the rotting food in rubbish dumps is bad
for the environment. The good news is that a few simple habits can make a big difference.
Start by planning your family’s meals for the week before you go shopping. When you know what
you are going to cook, you will buy only what you need.
Before you leave for the shops, look in your fridge and cupboards. There is no point in buying another
bag of rice if there are already two at the back of the cupboard. Then write a shopping list and stick
to it. Specials such as ‘buy two, get one free’ are only a bargain if you will really use all three.
My aunt runs a small catering business, and she says that the secret is in the way food is stored.
Keep vegetables in the drawer at the bottom of the fridge, and keep bread in a cool, dry place.
When you unpack your shopping, move the older food to the front of the shelf and put the new food
at the back. In this way, you will use the oldest food first.
Cook only as much food as your family will eat, and dish up smaller portions. People can always
come back for a second helping.
Do not throw away what is left over after supper. Yesterday’s rice and vegetables can easily become
tomorrow’s lunch.
If you have more food than you can eat in time, put it in the freezer. Bread, meat and even cooked
stews can be frozen for weeks.
Wasting less food is good for your pocket and good for the planet. Start today!
                                                                                  [Examiner’s own text]

                                                                       TOTAL SECTION B: 10
