1.3 Refer to the graph and the extract below on global warming.
GREENHOUSE-GAS EMISSIONS BY SECTOR IN A COAL-DEPENDENT COUNTRY
          Electricity and heat production 46%

                               Transport 12%
                              Agriculture 11%
          Buildings (homes and offices) 9%
                    Waste (landfill sites) 6%

                                                      Share of total emissions (%)

                         HEAT WAVE GRIPS NORTHERN TOWNS
For six days in a row, temperatures of more than 40 ◦ C were
recorded in several towns in the north of the country. Schools ended
lessons early, and clinics treated elderly people and young children
for heat exhaustion and dehydration. Farmers reported that cattle
died near dry water holes and that crops wilted in the fields.
Because many households ran fans and air conditioners day and
night, the demand for electricity rose sharply, and most of this
electricity is produced in coal-fired power stations. Climate
scientists warn that heat waves like this one will become longer and
more frequent as the earth continues to warm.
[Source: Examiner’s own graph (simplified data) and extract (fictional event)]
         1.3.1 Define the term global warming. (1 x 2) (2)
1.3.2 Which sector on the graph releases the largest share of
                       greenhouse gases? (1 x 1) (1)
1.3.3 Name the main greenhouse gas that is released when coal is
                       burnt. (1 x 1) (1)
1.3.4 Explain the link between the high demand for electricity during
the heat wave and further global warming. (1 x 2) (2)
1.3.5 According to the extract, give ONE effect of the heat wave on
                       people. (1 x 1) (1)
1.3.6 In a paragraph of approximately EIGHT lines, suggest
sustainable strategies that the government and households of
                       this country can use to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. (4 x 2) (8)

2.4 Refer to the extract below on the 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

DEADLY EARTHQUAKES STRIKE TÜRKIYE AND SYRIA
In the early hours of 6 February 2023, while most people were
asleep, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7,8 struck southern
Türkiye close to the border with Syria. The earthquake occurred
along the East Anatolian Fault, where the Arabian Plate and the
Anatolian Plate slide past each other. About nine hours later a
second, very strong earthquake (magnitude 7,5) struck the same
region, followed by thousands of smaller aftershocks. Thousands of
apartment blocks collapsed, many of which had not been built
according to the building regulations. More than 50 000 people died
in the two countries and millions were left homeless in freezing
winter weather. Roads, hospitals and water pipes were damaged,
which made rescue work very difficult.

2.4.4 Explain why the aftershocks made the disaster worse. (1 x 2) (2)

QUESTION 3: GEOGRAPHICAL SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES
GENERAL INFORMATION ON CERES
Co-ordinates: 33◦ 22′ S; 19◦ 19′ E
Ceres is a town in the Witzenberg Local Municipality in the Western Cape, about 150 km
north-east of Cape Town by road. The town lies in a valley surrounded by mountains of
the Cape Fold Belt. The area receives most of its rain in winter, and snow sometimes
falls on the surrounding mountains. The Ceres valley is one of the most important
deciduous-fruit-producing areas in South Africa (apples, pears and stone fruit). The R46
enters the town from the south through Michell’s Pass.
                                                                 [Adapted from various sources]

3.1.3 Give the co-ordinates (latitude and longitude, in degrees,
minutes and seconds) of trigonometrical station 93 in block D4
                     on the topographical map. (2 x 1) (2)
3.1.4 Calculate the straight-line distance in kilometres (km) from
trigonometrical station 257 in block B5 to trigonometrical station
93 in block D4 on the topographical map.
                     Formula: Actual distance = Map distance × Map scale (2 x 1) (2)
3.1.5 Calculate the area, in square kilometres (km2 ), of block D4 on
the topographical map. Show ALL calculations.
                     Formula: Area = Length × Breadth (3 x 1) (3)
3.1.6 Determine the true bearing of trigonometrical station 93 (block
                     D4) from trigonometrical station 257 (block B5). (1 x 2) (2)
