INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

1. This question paper consists of THREE sections:

SECTION B: TWO compulsory questions (QUESTIONS 2 and 3) (40)
      SECTION C: THREE questions (QUESTIONS 4, 5 and 6) – answer TWO (40)
2. Answer ALL the questions in SECTION A and SECTION B, and any TWO questions in
      SECTION C.
3. If you answer more than TWO questions in SECTION C, only the first TWO questions
      will be marked.
4. Write ALL the answers in the ANSWER BOOK.
5. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this question
      paper.
6. Start EACH section on a NEW page.
7. Write in FULL SENTENCES, except when you are asked to state, name, list or give one
word/term. In SECTION C your answers must be written in PARAGRAPHS; answers
written in point form will earn a maximum of HALF the marks.
8. The mark allocation for each question should guide you on the length and detail of your
answers. For example, (2 x 2) (4) means that TWO facts or points are required, each
worth TWO marks: one mark for the fact and one mark for an explanation or example.
(2 x 4) (8) means TWO well-developed points, each stated, explained, supported with
an example AND linked to a consequence or evaluation.
9. Leave a line open between subsections of questions.
10. Write neatly and legibly with a blue or black pen.

QUESTION 2
Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow.

THE TAPS RUN DRY IN MASAKHANE
Masakhane is a fictional township. For the past three months the taps have been dry for
most of the week, and refuse has not been collected. A new water pipeline was promised
two years ago, but residents later learnt that the contract had been given to a company
owned by a relative of an official, and that the work was never completed.
Learners at Masakhane Secondary School say that they arrive late because they must
queue for water before school, and the school toilets cannot be flushed. Last week, a
small group of young people burnt tyres and damaged the community library during a
protest. Other youths have started a WhatsApp group to collect evidence and plan a
peaceful meeting with the ward councillor.
[Examiner’s own extract. The place and events are fictional.]

2.1 Define the term social justice. (1 x 2) (2)
2.2 Name TWO forms of corruption, other than nepotism, that can occur in
          local government. (2 x 1) (2)
2.3 Explain TWO ways in which corruption, such as that described in the
extract, leads to poor service delivery. (2 x 2) (4)
2.4 Discuss how the water shortage could have a negative effect on learners’
health AND on their school performance. Give ONE way for EACH. (2 x 2) (4)
2.5 Explain why the youths who damaged the library acted irresponsibly,
even though their complaint was valid. (1 x 2) (2)
2.6 Recommend TWO responsible ways in which the young people of
Masakhane can make their voices heard. In your answer, also indicate
how EACH way could benefit the community. (2 x 3) (6)
                                                                                      [20]

QUESTION 3
Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow.

“THAT SUBJECT IS NOT FOR YOU”
Lerato is the only girl in her school’s Grade 10 Electrical Technology class. Some boys
laugh at her mistakes, hide her tools and tell her that “girls belong in the office, not on a
construction site”. One teacher often asks the boys to do the practical demonstrations,
while Lerato is asked to take notes.
In the same grade, Themba chose Hospitality Studies because he wants to become a
chef. A group of learners call him insulting names, post edited photos of him wearing an
apron on social media and say that “real men don’t cook”. Themba has started to skip
lessons, and Lerato is thinking of changing subjects.
[Examiner’s own extract. The names and events are fictional.]

3.1 Explain the difference between sex and gender. (1 x 2) (2)

3.4 Discuss TWO ways in which the teacher’s behaviour towards Lerato
reinforces gender stereotyping in the classroom. (2 x 2) (4)
3.5 Explain how gender stereotyping could limit Lerato’s career possibilities. (1 x 2) (2)
3.6 Propose TWO measures that the school management could take to
create a safe and gender-inclusive school. In your answer, also indicate
how EACH measure could benefit learners such as Lerato and Themba. (2 x 3) (6)
                                                                                    [20]

QUESTION 4
Read the extract below and answer the question that follows.

                                     WINNING AT ANY COST?
At a fictional inter-district athletics meeting, two Grade 11 sprinters were disqualified after
testing positive for a banned substance that they had bought online. In the same month,
the coach of a local football club was suspended after officials found messages in which
he offered money to the goalkeeper of the opposing team to “let in a few goals”. Parents
say that young athletes are under huge pressure to win bursaries and contracts, and that
some sports bodies do little to educate players about fair play.
[Examiner’s own extract. The names and events are fictional.]

Write paragraphs on biases and unfair practices in sport. Use the following as a guideline:
• State FOUR examples of biases or unfair practices in sport, other than doping (4 x 1) (4)
       and match-fixing.
• Analyse how doping AND match-fixing harm the sport itself. Discuss ONE (2 x 4) (8)
       way for EACH.
• Critically discuss TWO strategies that schools and sports bodies could use to (2 x 4) (8)
promote fair play and prevent unethical behaviour in sport.
                                                                                            [20]

QUESTION 5
Read the extract below and answer the question that follows.

                                         OFF THE COUCH
Sipho (15) lives with his mother and two sisters in a fictional township. The only park
nearby has broken lights and is known for muggings, so his mother does not allow him to
play there. The family cannot afford gym membership or club fees, and Sipho spends
almost two hours a day in taxis travelling to and from school, so he gets home after dark.
Most evenings he scrolls on his phone until late. His older sister says she would like to go
jogging, but some neighbours tease women who exercise in the street.
[Examiner’s own extract. The names and events are fictional.]

Write paragraphs on physical activity and well-being. Use the following as a guideline:
• State FOUR health risks of a physically inactive lifestyle. (4 x 1) (4)
• Analyse how regular physical activity can improve a teenager’s mental health (2 x 4) (8)
AND school performance. Discuss ONE way for EACH.
• Critically discuss TWO barriers that prevent teenagers in South African (2 x 4) (8)
communities from being physically active, and suggest how EACH barrier
       could be overcome.
                                                                                           [20]

QUESTION 6
Read the extract below and answer the question that follows.

                               STUDY SMART, CHOOSE WISELY
Nomvula studies for many hours before every test, but she forgets most of the work by the
time she writes. During the examination she often spends too long on the first questions
and does not finish the paper. She wants to study fashion design after matric. A friend has
shown her an advertisement for a cheap “fast-track diploma” at a college that she has
never heard of and that promises “no matric needed, certificate in six weeks”.
[Examiner’s own extract. The names and events are fictional.]

Write paragraphs on study skills and further study. Use the following as a guideline:
• State FOUR ways in which Nomvula could improve her memory when (4 x 1) (4)
       studying.
• Analyse TWO examination-writing strategies that would help Nomvula to (2 x 4) (8)
manage her time and complete the paper.
• Critically discuss how enrolling at an unaccredited (bogus) college could harm (2 x 4) (8)
Nomvula’s future, AND how she could check whether an institution and its
       qualification are genuine.
                                                                                             [20]
                                                                         TOTAL SECTION C: 40
                                                                           GRAND TOTAL: 100
