Fifteen-year-old Karabo is in Grade 10. Over the past year her body has changed a lot:
she has grown taller, her skin has become oily and she often feels emotional without
knowing why. She spends hours scrolling through social media, comparing herself with
influencers whose photos are edited. Classmates have made hurtful comments about her
weight, and she has started to skip lunch and avoid sport.
Karabo’s boyfriend, who is two years older, checks her phone every day, tells her which
friends she may see and becomes angry when she wants to spend time with her family.
He says that this is how a “real man” shows that he cares. Karabo feels confused, but she
does not want to lose him.

                                     LIFE IN EXTENSION 9
Extension 9 is a fictional informal settlement on the edge of a large city. Most households
have no electricity, and families cook and keep warm with paraffin stoves and open fires
inside their shacks. Water is collected in buckets from a single communal tap, and there
are not enough toilets. Many adults are unemployed, and some children go to school
 without breakfast.
Residents say that they are afraid to walk to the tap or the taxi rank after dark because of
muggings, and that parents keep their children indoors. A group of Grade 10 learners from
the nearby high school wants to start a community service project in Extension 9.

          and mental health of residents. (2 x 2) (4)
4.5 Explain ONE way in which taking part in community service can benefit

                               NOT WELCOME ON THE TRIP
Amogelang is a Grade 10 learner who uses a wheelchair. When her class planned an
educational trip to a museum, she was told that she could not go because “the bus is not
suitable and it will slow everyone down”. No one tried to find another way for her to take
 part.
In the same class, Jean-Pierre, whose family moved to South Africa from another African
country, is often mocked because of his accent. Some learners call him insulting names
and tell him to “go back home”. He has stopped answering questions in class.

                                   GET MOVING, MZANSI!
The Life Orientation teacher at a fictional high school noticed that many Grade 10 learners
spend their breaks sitting and using their phones. She started a weekly “Move It”
programme that includes a warm-up, a short fitness circuit with skipping, push-ups and
stretches, and a cool-down. Once a month the programme ends with indigenous games,
such as morabaraba, diketo and kgati (rope skipping), taught by learners from different
 cultural backgrounds.

6.4 Explain why the warm-up AND the cool-down are important parts of the
programme. Give ONE reason for EACH. (2 x 2) (4)
6.5 Name TWO South African indigenous games, other than those
