HERITAGE MONTH AT THAVHA YA MVULA CULTURAL VILLAGE (a fictional village)
Every September, Thavha ya Mvula Cultural Village near Thohoyandou in Limpopo invites
visitors to celebrate Heritage Month. Guests walk between round huts with clay walls that
are decorated with colourful patterns. Local women show visitors how they shape and fire
clay pots, and woodcarvers sell bowls and drums that they have made by hand.
In the evenings, young people perform traditional dances to the sound of drums and reed
pipes, and elders tell folk tales around the fire in Tshivenda, with a guide who translates.
Visitors can taste traditional dishes made from maize, morogo and mopane worms.
A stone-walled ruin on the hill above the village has been declared a provincial heritage site.
The village committee is worried that some tour groups want shorter ’shows’ and that some
visitors take photographs of private ceremonies without asking.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE AT UBUHLE BEACH RESORT (a fictional resort)
Ubuhle Beach Resort on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is full every December. Last
season, guests left plastic bottles and food packaging on the beach, and the resort’s
swimming pools and gardens used so much water that the nearby village had water cuts.
Most managers at the resort come from Johannesburg, and only a few local people are
employed as cleaners and gardeners. The resort buys all its food from a large supplier in
Durban, so very little money is spent in the local community.
The new manager wants to change this. ’Our beach and our neighbours are the reason our
guests come here,’ she said at a staff meeting.
