QUESTION 1
Read BOTH TEXT A and TEXT B and answer the set questions.
TEXT A
SLEEP: THE SECRET WEAPON
1
It is half past eleven on a school night in Mamelodi. Sixteen-year-old Karabo Molefe
is lying in bed, but she is not asleep. Her face is lit by the blue glow of her cellphone
as she scrolls through videos and replies to messages from her friends. At half past
five her alarm will ring, and she will drag herself out of bed to catch a taxi to school. ‘I
am always tired,’ she admits, ‘but I thought that was just part of being a teenager.’
5
2
Karabo is not alone. Health experts generally recommend that teenagers sleep
between eight and ten hours a night, yet many young people get far less. Like
Karabo, they stay up late, wake up early and spend the school day in a fog of
tiredness.
3
Scientists have discovered that the body clock of a teenager works differently from
10
that of a child or an adult. During the teenage years, the brain begins to release
melatonin1, the substance that makes us feel sleepy, later in the evening. This is why
many teenagers do not feel tired at ten o’clock at night, but find it almost impossible
to wake up in the morning. Teenagers are therefore not lazy; their bodies are simply
following a different timetable.
15
4
Unfortunately, modern habits make the problem worse. The light from screens tricks
the brain into thinking that it is still daytime, which delays sleep even further. Social
media apps are designed to keep users scrolling, and ‘just one more video’ easily
becomes twenty. Energy drinks and strong coffee, which some learners use to stay
awake while they study, can keep the body alert for hours.
20
5
The effects of too little sleep are serious. A tired learner finds it difficult to concentrate
in class and struggles to remember what was taught. Sleep is the time when the
brain sorts and stores new information, so a learner who studies until two o’clock in
the morning may remember less than one who goes to bed early. Lack of sleep also
affects our moods: tired teenagers are more likely to feel irritable2, anxious or sad.
25
On the sports field, their reactions are slower, and they are more likely to be injured.
6
The good news is that small changes can make a big difference. Experts advise
teenagers to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even over
weekends. They suggest switching off phones and other screens at least an hour
before bedtime and keeping them out of the bedroom. A cool, dark and quiet room
30
helps the body to relax. Instead of scrolling, learners can read a book, listen to calm
music or write in a journal.
7
In some countries, schools have even experimented with starting the school day later
in the morning. Teachers at these schools have reported that learners are more alert
in class and arrive late less often.
35
8
Karabo decided to test the advice for one month. She now charges her phone in the
kitchen and is in bed by ten o’clock. ‘The first week was hard. I felt as if I was missing
out on everything,’ she says. ‘But now I wake up before my alarm, I am awake in
Maths, and my marks have gone up. I didn’t realise how much I was losing by staying
awake.’

Sleep is not a waste of time. It is one of the most powerful tools that a learner has. As
Karabo puts it, ‘If you want to work smarter, you have to sleep better.’

SECTION B: SUMMARY
QUESTION 2
Many teenagers receive pocket money, but few of them manage to save any of it.
Read the passage (TEXT C) below and list SEVEN points on how teenagers can save money.
INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Your summary must be written in point form.
2.
List your SEVEN points in full sentences, using no more than 70 words.
3.
Number your sentences from 1 to 7.
4.
Write only ONE point per sentence.
5.
Use your OWN words as far as possible.
6.
Indicate the total number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your
summary.
TEXT C
EVERY RAND COUNTS
Many teenagers believe that saving money is something only adults need to worry about. However,
the habits that you form now will follow you for the rest of your life. Here is how you can start.
First, make a budget. Write down all the money that you receive, such as pocket money or birthday
gifts, and everything that you spend it on. You may be surprised to see how quickly small amounts
disappear.
Learn to tell the difference between what you need and what you want. Taxi fare to school is a need;
a third pair of sneakers is a want. Spend on your needs first.
It is much easier to save when you have a reason. Decide what you are saving for, whether it is a
new phone, a laptop for your studies or a holiday, and how much it will cost.
Whenever you receive money, put some of it away immediately, before you spend anything. Many
people who wait to save ‘whatever is left over’ at the end of the month find that nothing is left.
My cousin Thabo kept his savings in a shoebox under his bed, and his little brother found it! Rather
open a savings account at a bank. Money that is not in your pocket is harder to spend.
Before you buy anything, compare prices at different shops and online. The same item can cost much
less elsewhere, especially when it is on special.
Shopping centres are designed to make you spend. If you see something you like, do not buy it on
the spot. Wait a day or two and ask yourself whether you really need it.
Finally, look for ways to earn a little extra money. You could wash cars, sell snacks at school events
or help younger learners with their homework.
Saving money takes patience, but every rand counts. Start small, start now, and your future self will
thank you.
