QUESTION 2
Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow.

                            A WEEKEND THAT WENT WRONG
Sixteen-year-old Thabo used to be one of the top learners in his Grade 11 class and
played in the school’s first soccer team. Since the June holidays he has started spending
his weekends with a group of older boys from his street. At their gatherings, alcohol is
easily available and some of the boys smoke dagga (cannabis). Thabo said that he was
“only trying it” because he did not want the group to think that he was weak.
Last month Thabo arrived late for school on two Mondays, he missed a soccer practice
and his marks in two tests dropped sharply. His friend Lerato noticed that he had become
moody and irritable. When she was invited to the next gathering, she felt uncomfortable
but did not want to lose her friends.
Lerato decided to speak to the school’s Life Orientation teacher, who referred Thabo to
 the school-based support team.

2.4 Explain TWO assertive ways in which Lerato could refuse the invitation
          to the next gathering without losing her self-respect. (2 x 2) (4)

QUESTION 4
Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow.

                                    “BOYS DON’T CRY”
At a youth dialogue held at a community hall, Grade 11 learners shared what they are told
at home about being a boy or a girl. Sipho said that his uncles tell him that “boys don’t cry”
and that a real man must be in control of his girlfriend. Ayanda said that she is expected to
cook and clean after school while her brothers play soccer, and that she is often told that
girls do not need to study further because they will get married.
A social worker at the dialogue explained that such expectations are not natural facts but
are learnt from family, friends, the media and culture. She warned that rigid gender roles
can harm the health and well-being of both boys and girls, and that unequal power
between men and women is one of the root causes of gender-based violence (GBV).
[Examiner’s own extract. The names and events are fictional.]

QUESTION 5
Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow.

                                    OUR RIVER IS SICK
Residents of a fictional township, Mpumelelo, say that the river running through their area
has become a health hazard. Household refuse, plastic and building rubble are dumped
illegally on its banks, and raw sewage leaks into the water from broken pipes. Children still
swim in the river, and some families use the water for washing clothes. Local clinic staff
report more cases of diarrhoea and skin infections during the summer months.
Residents also complain that heatwaves have become longer and that heavy storms now
flood low-lying houses near the river more often. A group of Grade 11 learners has formed
an eco-club and wants to take action.
[Examiner’s own extract. The place and events are fictional.]

5.1 Name TWO types of pollution evident in the extract. (2 x 1) (2)
5.2 Explain TWO ways in which the polluted river poses a threat to the health
          of the community. (2 x 2) (4)
5.3 Discuss how climate change could affect EACH of the following in South
          Africa:
          (a) Food security
          (b) Communities living in low-lying areas (2 x 2) (4)
5.4 Explain how the situation in Mpumelelo violates the residents’
          constitutional right to a healthy environment. (1 x 2) (2)
5.5 Design an action plan of FOUR steps that the eco-club could follow to
address the pollution of the river. (4 x 2) (8)
                                                                                       [20]

                         LEARNERS DEMAND A SAFE CROSSING
Learners at a fictional high school in Gauteng have to cross a busy main road every
morning to get to school. There is no pedestrian crossing, the speed limit is often ignored
and two learners were injured in accidents this year. The Representative Council of
Learners (RCL) has decided to start a campaign to have a pedestrian crossing and speed
humps built. They plan to collect signatures from learners, parents and residents, to post
about the campaign on social media and to invite a local community radio station to report
 on the matter.

6.4 Discuss TWO ways in which the media could help the learners to make
          their campaign successful. (2 x 2) (4)
6.5 Explain TWO reasons why it is important for young people to take part
in democratic processes such as this campaign. (2 x 2) (4)
6.6 Critically evaluate TWO challenges that the learners may experience
