QUESTION 2

2.1 Ayanda wants to buy a double-door fridge. The cash price of the fridge is R14 999,00.
She cannot pay cash, so the furniture store offers her the following hire-purchase (HP)
          agreement:

              • A deposit of 15% of the cash price must be paid.
              • The balance (cash price minus deposit) is financed at a simple interest rate of
                21% per annum.
              • The loan must be repaid in 24 equal monthly instalments.

Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
2.1.1 Calculate the deposit that Ayanda must pay. (2)
2.1.2 Calculate the total amount (balance plus interest) that Ayanda will repay
                     over the 24 months.
You may use the following formula: A = P(1+i×n) where n = number
                     of years (5)
          2.1.3 Calculate Ayanda’s monthly instalment. (2)
2.1.4 Ayanda says that buying the fridge on hire purchase will cost her less than
R5 000 more than the cash price.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether her statement is valid. (4)
2.2 The price of a school blazer at a school-uniform shop was R620,00 in January 2024.
In January 2025 the price of the same blazer was R655,00.
2.2.1 Calculate the percentage increase in the price of the blazer.
You may use the following formula: Percentage increase
                       new price − old price
                     = × 100% (3)
                            old price
2.2.2 Assume that the inflation rate for 2024 was 3,2%. If the price of the blazer
had increased at the inflation rate only, determine how much LESS parents
would have paid for the blazer in January 2025. (3)

QUESTION 4

4.1 Sizwe hires out a jumping castle for children’s parties in Kagiso. His fixed costs
(storage and insurance) are R1 800 per month. Each booking costs him a further R200
for transport and cleaning. He charges R500 per booking.
TABLE 4 below shows his total monthly cost and his income for different numbers
          of bookings.

TABLE 4: SIZWE’S MONTHLY COST AND INCOME

             Number of bookings 0 2 4 6 8 10 12

             Income (in rand) 0 1 000 2 000 B 4 000 5 000 6 000

                                                                                  [Examiner’s own]
Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
4.1.1 Identify the independent variable in this context. (2)
          4.1.2 Calculate the missing values A and B. (4)
4.1.3 Write down a formula that can be used to calculate Sizwe’s monthly
                     income, in the form:
                     Income = …                                                                          (2)
4.1.4 The graph of Sizwe’s TOTAL MONTHLY COST is drawn on ANSWER
SHEET 2. On the same set of axes, draw a graph to show his MONTHLY
                     INCOME. Label your graph. (4)
4.1.5 Use the graphs to determine the number of bookings at which Sizwe’s
income is equal to his total cost. (2)
4.1.6 Sizwe claims that he will make a profit of at least R3 000 in a month in
                     which he has 15 bookings.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether his claim is valid. (4)
