QUESTION 1

1.1 Nomsa sells vetkoek (amagwinya) at a weekend market to raise money for her church
          choir. Below is her recipe.

                             NOMSA’S VETKOEK (makes 24 vetkoek)
             Ingredients: Method:
                                                      1. Mix the dry ingredients, add the
                  • 1 kg cake flour water and knead the dough for 20
                  • 10 g instant yeast minutes.
                  • 3 tablespoons sugar 2. Cover the dough and let it rise for 1
                                                      hour 15 minutes.
                  • 2 teaspoons salt
                                                      3. Heat the oil to 350 ◦ F and fry the
                  • 625 mℓ lukewarm water vetkoek in batches until golden brown.
                  • Sunflower oil for deep-frying NOTE: 1 tablespoon = 15 mℓ; 1
                                                      teaspoon = 5 mℓ
                                                                                 [Examiner’s own]
Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
1.1.1 Convert the amount of sugar in the recipe to millilitres. (2)
1.1.2 Name the measuring instrument that Nomsa should use to check the
                     temperature of the oil. (2)
1.1.3 Convert the temperature of the oil to degrees Celsius (◦ C), rounded to ONE
                     decimal place.
                     You may use the following formula: ◦ C = (◦ F − 32◦ ) ÷ 1,8 (3)
1.1.4 Nomsa has an order for 150 vetkoek. Cake flour is sold in 2,5 kg bags.
Determine the number of bags of cake flour that she must buy. (4)
1.1.5 On market day Nomsa starts to knead the dough at 05:50. After the dough
has risen, it takes her 1 hour 40 minutes to fry all 150 vetkoek. The market
                     opens at 09:00.
Nomsa claims that all the vetkoek will be fried before the market opens.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether her claim is valid. (4)

QUESTION 2

2.1 ANNEXURE A in the ADDENDUM shows a road map of the Mafube Valley district,
a fictional district with eight towns.
Use ANNEXURE A to answer the questions that follow.
2.1.1 Name the national road that connects Emthonjeni and Nqabeni. (2)
2.1.2 Give the general direction of Thabong from Siyakhula. (2)
2.1.3 Measure the straight-line distance (in cm) between Lindela and Thabong
on the map. Hence, use the bar scale to determine the actual straight-line
distance, in kilometres, between the two towns. (5)
2.1.4 Use the bar scale to determine the number scale of the map in the form
                     1 : ... (3)
2.1.5 A tourist chooses ONE of the eight towns on the map at random to visit.
Determine, as a percentage, the probability that the town lies on a national
                     road. (3)
2.2 The Lindela Netball Club has a tournament in Thabong that starts at 10:00. The team
travels in a hired minibus along the N13 to Siyakhula and then along the R513 to
Thabong, a road distance of 150 km.

              • The minibus leaves Lindela at 07:50 and travels at an average speed of 90 km/h.
              • It stops for 20 minutes in Siyakhula to collect two players.
2.2.1 The coach claims that the team will arrive in Thabong at least 15 minutes
                     before the tournament starts.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether the coach’s claim is valid.
                                                                     Distance
You may use the following formula: Time = (5)
                                                                   Average speed
2.2.2 The minibus uses 1 litre of diesel for every 9,6 km travelled. Diesel costs
R21,35 per litre. The 15 players share the cost of the diesel for the return
                     trip (there and back) equally.
Calculate the amount that each player must pay. (4)
                                                                                                    [24]

QUESTION 3

3.1 Ayanda makes cylindrical candles to sell at craft markets. Each candle has a diameter
of 7 cm and a height of 12 cm. The candles are packed upright in rectangular
cardboard boxes with inside measurements of 45 cm × 30 cm × 26 cm.
                           7 cm

                           LABEL 12 cm 26 cm

                                                                                  30 cm
                                                            45 cm
                      CANDLE BOX

The following formulae may be used:
            Volume of a cylinder = π × radius2 × height, using π = 3,142
            Total surface area of a rectangular box = 2(l × w) + 2(l × h) + 2(w × h)
Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
3.1.1 Define the term volume. (2)
3.1.2 Calculate the volume of ONE candle in cm3 . (3)
3.1.3 Every 1 cm3 of candle wax has a mass of 0,9 g. Candle wax is sold in 5 kg
                     blocks.
Ayanda has an order for 120 candles. Determine the number of blocks of
                     wax that she must buy.
                     NOTE: 1 kg = 1 000 g (5)
3.1.4 A rectangular paper label is wrapped once around each candle with an
overlap of 1 cm. The height of the label is 80% of the height of the candle.
Calculate the area of ONE label in cm2 .
You may use the following formulae:
                     Circumference = π × diameter       and      Area of a rectangle = length ×
                     width (4)
3.1.5 Ayanda claims that ONE box can hold more than 40 candles if the candles
                     are packed upright in layers.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether her claim is valid. (6)
3.1.6 Use the inside measurements of the box to calculate the total surface area
(in cm2 ) of cardboard needed for ONE box. Ignore the thickness of the
                     cardboard and any overlaps. (3)

4.1 The Grade 11 learners of Sekhukhune High School are going on a school trip by
bus. ANNEXURE B in the ADDENDUM shows the seating plan of the bus. Use
ANNEXURE B to answer the questions that follow.
4.1.1 On which side of the bus (left or right) does the driver sit? (2)
4.1.2 Determine the total number of passenger seats on the bus. (3)
4.1.3 All the passenger seats are given out at random. Determine, as a percentage,
the probability that a passenger gets a window seat. (3)
4.1.4 Give ONE reason why the teachers usually sit in row 1 of the bus. (2)
4.1.5 The school rule says there must be at least ONE teacher for every 10
learners on a trip. Every passenger seat on the bus will be taken by a teacher
                     or a learner.
Determine the maximum number of learners that can go on the trip. (4)
4.1.6 The bus company charges R14,50 per kilometre for the 386 km return trip,
                     plus a driver’s fee of R1 200.
The principal claims that if the total cost is shared equally among 48
learners only, each learner will pay less than R140.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether the principal’s claim is valid. (4)
4.2 For the trip the school bought folding camping chairs that must be assembled. The
parts list from the instruction sheet for ONE chair is shown below.

PARTS LIST FOR ONE CHAIR Tools included:
Part Description Qty 4 mm Allen key and 10 mm spanner
A Seat frame 1 Step 1: Fix the backrest (B) to the seat frame (A)
             B Backrest 1 with 2 bolts, 4 washers and 2 lock nuts.
             C Armrest 2
Step 2: Fix each armrest (C) to the seat frame with
             D Bolt (M6 × 40 mm) 6
2 bolts, 4 washers and 2 lock nuts.
             E Washer 12
             F Lock nut 6
                                                                                   [Examiner’s own]
4.2.1 Determine the total number of washers needed to assemble 15 chairs. (2)
4.2.2 Name the TWO tools that are needed to tighten a bolt and lock nut. (2)
4.3 To raise funds for the trip, the school sold 400 raffle tickets for a hamper. Lerato
bought 15 tickets. One winning ticket is drawn at random.
4.3.1 Determine, as a percentage, the probability that Lerato wins the hamper. (2)
4.3.2 Determine, as a decimal, the probability that Lerato does NOT win. (2)
                                                                                                         [26]
                                                                                           TOTAL: 100
