QUESTION 2

2.1 Nomsa received R15 000 from her late grandmother’s savings. She wants to invest
the money for 3 years. Her bank offers her the following two options:
OPTION A: 8,5% simple interest per annum
OPTION B: 8% interest per annum, compounded annually
Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
2.1.1 Explain the difference between simple interest and compound interest. (2)
2.1.2 Calculate the total value of Nomsa’s investment after 3 years if she chooses
                     OPTION A.
You may use the following formula: A = P(1+i×n) where n = number
                     of years (3)
2.1.3 Show, by calculating the value of the investment at the end of EACH year,
that the value of the investment after 3 years will be R18 895,68 if she
                     chooses OPTION B. (4)
2.1.4 Nomsa says that OPTION B is the better option. Determine by how much
OPTION B is better than OPTION A after 3 years. (2)

2.2.2 Write down a formula that can be used to calculate the time taken (in
minutes) for any number of learners, in the form:
                     Time = …                                                                        (2)

QUESTION 4

4.1 Thandi bakes and sells vetkoek at the Mamelodi taxi rank. She pays R450 per month
to rent her stall. It costs her R2,50 to make ONE vetkoek and she sells each vetkoek
          for R5,50.
TABLE 2 below shows her total monthly costs and income for different numbers of
          vetkoek.

TABLE 2: THANDI’S MONTHLY COSTS AND INCOME

                           Number of vetkoek 0 50 100 150 200 250
                           Total cost (in rand) 450 575 700 A 950 1 075
                           Income (in rand) 0 275 550 825 B 1 375

Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
          4.1.1 Calculate the missing values A and B. (4)
4.1.2 Write down a formula that can be used to calculate Thandi’s total monthly
                      cost, in the form:
                      Total cost = … (2)
4.1.3 The graph of Thandi’s monthly income is drawn on ANSWER SHEET 2.
On the same set of axes, draw a graph to show her TOTAL MONTHLY
                      COST. Label your graph. (4)
4.1.4 Write down the break-even point and explain what it means in this context. (3)
4.1.5 Calculate Thandi’s profit in a month in which she sells 400 vetkoek. (3)
4.2 The Ndaba family lives in a town where the municipality uses the step tariff system
below to calculate the monthly cost of water.

TABLE 3: DOMESTIC WATER TARIFFS (2025/2026)

STEP WATER USED PER MONTH TARIFF PER kℓ (excl. VAT)
                  Step 1 0 – 6 kℓ R0,00 (free basic water)
                  Step 2 more than 6 kℓ – 10,5 kℓ R25,00
                  Step 3 more than 10,5 kℓ – 35 kℓ R38,50
                  Step 4 more than 35 kℓ R52,80

                                                                                      [Examiner’s own]
          NOTE: 1 kℓ = 1 000 ℓ VAT = 15%
Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
4.2.1 The Ndaba family used 18 kℓ of water in October. Convert 18 kℓ to litres. (2)
4.2.2 Calculate the amount that the Ndaba family must pay for the 18 kℓ of water
used in October, including VAT. (6)
