QUESTION 2 (Start on a new page.)
Grade 11 learners investigate how the angle between two forces affects their resultant. Two
spring balances pull on a small metal ring O on a horizontal board. One spring balance always
pulls with a force of 40 N and the other with a force of 25 N. The angle θ between the two
forces is changed, and a third spring balance is used each time to measure the force that
balances the two forces.
                                           25 N

                                          θ
                                                            40 N
                                O
The results are shown in the table below.

QUESTION 4 (Start on a new page.)
A wooden crate of mass 45 kg rests on a horizontal concrete floor in a workshop in Rustenburg.
The coefficient of static friction between the crate and the floor is 0,40 and the coefficient of
kinetic friction is 0,28.
4.1 Differentiate between static frictional force and kinetic frictional force. (4)
4.2 A worker pushes HORIZONTALLY on the crate with a force of 100 N to the
right, but the crate does NOT move.
4.2.1 Write down the magnitude AND direction of the frictional force that
the floor exerts on the crate. (2)
4.2.2 Calculate the minimum horizontal force needed to START moving
                     the crate. (4)
4.3 The crate is now pulled to the right with a rope. The rope exerts a force of
180 N at an angle of 25◦ above the horizontal, as shown below, and the crate
         slides over the floor.
                                                                   180 N

                                    45 kg

4.3.1 Draw a labelled free-body diagram showing ALL the forces acting
on the crate while it slides. (4)

4.4 The worker now pulls with the SAME force, but at a LARGER angle above
the horizontal. How will the kinetic frictional force on the crate change? Write
down only INCREASES, DECREASES or REMAINS THE SAME. (1)
