QUESTION 2 (Start on a new page.)
A steel anchor ring O on a building site in Polokwane is pulled by three cables. The forces F1 ,
F2 and F3 act in the same plane, as shown in the diagram below (not drawn to scale).

      • F1 = 60 N acts horizontally to the right (east).
      • F2 = 35 N acts vertically upwards (north).
      • F3 = 50 N acts at an angle of 30◦ below the horizontal, to the left.

                                            F2 = 35 N              N

QUESTION 4 (Start on a new page.)
Grade 11 learners investigate the relationship between the frictional force and the normal
force acting on a wooden block on a horizontal wooden table. They pull the block with a
spring balance, as shown below.
                                                   spring balance
                            wooden block                                     F

Extra mass pieces are placed on top of the block to change its total mass. For each total mass
the learners record:

      • The reading on the spring balance at the instant the block STARTS to move (maximum
        static frictional force), and
      • The reading on the spring balance while the block moves at a CONSTANT VELOCITY
        (kinetic frictional force).

          TOTAL MASS (kg) MAXIMUM STATIC KINETIC

4.2 For this investigation, write down the:
           4.2.1     Independent variable                                                         (1)
           4.2.2     Dependent variable                                                           (1)

           while it moves at constant velocity. (4)
4.4 Show by calculation that the normal force acting on the 2,0 kg block is 19,6
           N.                                                                                     (2)
Use the results for the 2,0 kg block to calculate the:
4.5 Coefficient of static friction, µs (3)

4.7 Use the results in the table to explain why it is easier to KEEP the block moving
           than to START it moving. (2)
4.8 How will the coefficient of static friction between the block and the table
           change if more mass pieces are added to the block? Write down only
           INCREASES, DECREASES or REMAINS THE SAME. (1)
