 INSTRUCTIONS TO MARKERS

     1. Candidates are required to answer ALL the questions.

     2. This marking guideline serves as a guide to markers. Some responses may
          require a marker's discretion.

     3. Candidates' responses should be assessed as objectively as possible.

 MARKING THE COMPREHENSION

 Because the focus is on understanding, incorrect spelling and language
errors in responses should not be penalised unless such errors change the
meaning/understanding. (Errors must still be indicated.)

 If a candidate uses words from a language other than the one being
examined, disregard those words, and if the answer still makes sense, do
not penalise. However, if a word from another language is used in a text
and required in an answer, this will be acceptable.

 For open-ended questions, no marks should be awarded for YES/NO or
          I AGREE/I DISAGREE. The reason/substantiation/motivation is what
          should be considered.

 When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole
sentence, mark correct provided that the word is underlined/ highlighted.

 When two/three facts/points are required and a range is given, mark only
          the first two/three.

  Accept dialectal variations.

 For multiple-choice questions, accept BOTH the letter corresponding with
the correct answer AND/OR the answer written out in full.

 SECTION A: COMPREHENSION

 QUESTION 1

1.1 1.1.1 Individuals involved in illegal, informal mining activities. (1)

1.2 1.2.1 Many South Africans turn to illegal mining after losing their jobs
due to the closure of large mining companies, and they resorted
to mining as a way to survive.  (2)

1.2.2 Resource depletion /safety concerns /rising operational costs
                 /changing global market prices.
NOTE: Accept any TWO suitable answers. (2)

        1.2.3 C/gap (1)

1.3 1.3.1 The Zama Zamas face dangers such as tunnel collapses due to
                 unstable mineshaftsexposure to toxic gases /drowning in
                 flooded mines. 
NOTE: Accept any TWO suitable answers. (2)

1.4 1.4.1 The Zama Zamas contribute to environmental damage by
contaminating water sources with harmful chemicals, such as
cyanide, which leads to pollution and poses health risks to local
                 communities. (2)

1.4.2 The extraction of minerals without proper regulation can result in
contamination of water supplies and soil degradation. (1)

1.4.3 He is the Minister of Mineral Resources therefore he has an insight
into the issue.  /This information makes the text more reliable
                 /credible/believable.  (2)

1.5 1.5.1 These words suggest that Zama Zamas are always in danger of
losing their lives because of rivalry and conflict amongst the
competitive Zama Zama groups and their leaders. /These suggest
that being a Zama Zama is never a fulfilling or danger-free job as
that field is infested with lots of fights for lucrative spots in
                 abandoned mines shafts.  (2)

        1.5.2 ‘smuggle’  (1)

1.6 1.6.1 Two challenges facing the authorities and law enforcement in
dealing with illegal mining are a huge sheer scale of the illegal
operations and lack of resources to fully address the root cause
of Zama Zama mining.  (2)

1.7 1.7.1 When people have access to skills and training, they can pursue
alternative, legal forms of employment that can offer a stable
income. /Skills development can empower individuals to be
economically self-sufficient, which will improve overall living
standards, thus decreasing engagement in illegal activities.  (2)

                               Grade 12 – Marking Guidelines

 1.8 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g
                  Yes
These impacts are multifaceted, affecting both environment and
local communities, which often result in long-lasting health
consequences. Contaminated water affects aquatic life and is a
life-threatening hazard to the health of local communities
depending on it. Soil erosion will reduce the productivity of land for
agriculture, and lead to the loss of fertile soil. Illegal miners are
also exposed to toxic chemicals, which can lead to chronic health
                 conditions.

                                                  OR

                 No
Most illegal miners, despite the challenges that they face, would
rather continue because they make a lot of untaxed money. Mining
companies should always follow the correct measures when
closing mining shafts instead of leaving them open.

NOTE: Accept other suitable responses. A candidate can score 1
mark for an answer that is not well-substantiated. Accept a
                 combination answer. (2)

 1.9 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
The title is suitable, because it is linked to the passage that
discusses the negative impacts of illegal mining to local
communities, the environment and the ecosystem. The passage
briefly explains the core business of illegal miners and the risks
that they face and thoroughly taking us through the reasons why
                 people engage in illegal mining.

                                                  OR

The title is not suitable because it seems misleading as one may
assume that the passage will reflect on how these miners have
taken over operating mines and are mining illegal, yet they are
simply mining from old, abandoned mines.

NOTE: Accept other suitable responses. A candidate can score 1
mark for an answer that is not well-substantiated. Accept a
                 combination answer. (2)

 1.10 2017  (1)

 1.11 Moving  (1)

1.12 There is a high percentage of approved loan applications for home
improvement because one does not probably need huge amount
for that project as compared to when one wants to buy a house.
/This contrast is brought by the fact that improving one’s home is
less expensive than buying a home. (2)

 1.13 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
                 Yes.
The numbers or bars clearly show the percentage of all the
approved loan applications for different reasons and that conveys
relevant or important information. This can easily be understood
                 by readers.

                                                 OR

                 No.
The numbers are clearly presented however the labelling of axis
is confusing. One might not know whether the words on the y-axis
are the reasons for approval or names of approved loans. It was
going to be simple to understand the information if it was just
names of loans versus % of approved applications.

NOTE: Accept other suitable answers. A candidate can score 1
mark for an answer that is not well substantiated. Accept a
                 combination answer. (2)

Gogo seems to be stressed over loadshedding, simply because it did
not occur as per the schedule provided. /Eve is stunned as to why Gogo
is so stressed instead of rejoicing; she added that Gogo was having
reverse loadshedding anxiety. /Gogo has probably prepared for the
loadshedding disruption, so she is justified as her plans were in vain.

                                                OR

          No.
Gogo should be rejoicing rather than being angry/annoyed. Not having
loadshedding as per schedule might be an indication that electricity
problems in their area have been fixed./Her behaviour towards Eve
(Frame 3) is also unacceptable as Eve does not have anything to do
with the irregular adherence to loadshedding schedule.
