1.1.2 Explain why the banning of these liberation movements created a
                     ‘political vacuum’ in South Africa in the 1960s. (1 x 2) (2)

3.1.4 Explain why the end of the Cold War left the United States of America
                     (USA) as the world’s only superpower. (1 x 2) (2)
3.1.5 Using the information in the source and your own knowledge, explain
why many developing countries had little choice but to accept the
conditions attached to loans from these institutions. (2 x 2) (4)
3.2 Read Source 3B.
3.2.1 Quote the ‘central challenge’ that the world faced, according to the
                     source. (1 x 2) (2)
3.2.2 Identify the TWO groups of countries in the source that faced ‘special
                     difficulties’ in responding to globalisation. (2 x 1) (2)
3.2.3 Explain what is meant by the statement that the benefits of
                     globalisation ‘are very unevenly shared’. (1 x 2) (2)
3.2.4 Comment on the reliability of this source to a historian researching
the impact of globalisation on developing countries. (2 x 2) (4)
3.3 Study Source 3C.
3.3.1 Identify TWO pieces of visual evidence in the cartoon which suggest
that the developed countries enjoyed the benefits of globalisation.
                                                                                   (2 x 1) (2)
3.3.2 Explain the symbolism of the following in the cartoon:
                     (a) The rope tying the small boat to the large ship (1 x 2) (2)
                     (b) The water labelled ‘DEBT’ inside the small boat (1 x 2) (2)
3.3.3 What message does the cartoonist convey regarding the relationship
between developed and developing countries in a globalised world?
                                                                                 (1 x 2) (2)
3.4 Refer to Sources 3B and 3C. Explain how the information in Source
3B supports the visual evidence in Source 3C regarding the impact of
         globalisation on developing countries. (2 x 2) (4)

Your essay should be about THREE pages long.

QUESTION 4: CIVIL RESISTANCE, 1970s TO 1980s: SOUTH AFRICA: THE CRISIS OF
                 APARTHEID IN THE 1980s
PW Botha’s reforms of the 1980s were an attempt to modernise apartheid, not to end it. Instead

QUESTION 5: THE COMING OF DEMOCRACY TO SOUTH AFRICA AND COMING TO
               TERMS WITH THE PAST

QUESTION 6: THE END OF THE COLD WAR AND A NEW WORLD ORDER: THE
                 EVENTS OF 1989

towards a negotiated settlement in South Africa.
Use relevant historical evidence to support your line of argument.
                                                                                          [50]
