QUESTION 1

1.1 Sipho runs a small food stall, Sipho’s Kota Corner, outside a taxi rank. He sells kotas
(a quarter loaf of bread with fillings).

              • His fixed costs (stall rental and trading permit) are R2 400 per month.
              • The ingredients and packaging cost R18,50 per kota.
              • He sells each kota for R35.

TABLE 1 below shows Sipho’s total monthly cost for selling different numbers of
          kotas.

TABLE 1: TOTAL MONTHLY COST OF SELLING KOTAS

                      Number of kotas 0 50 100 150 200 250
                      Total cost (R) 2 400 3 325 P 5 175 Q 7 025

The graph of the total monthly cost is drawn on ANSWER SHEET 1 in the
          ADDENDUM.
Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
          1.1.1 Calculate the missing values P and Q. (3)
1.1.2 On ANSWER SHEET 1, draw a graph of Sipho’s monthly income from
selling kotas. Label the graph. (4)
1.1.3 Use the graphs on ANSWER SHEET 1 to estimate the break-even point,
and explain what the break-even point means for Sipho’s business. (4)
1.1.4 Sipho sold 6 kotas per day for 22 trading days in a month. He stated that he
made a profit of at least R150 for that month.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether his statement is VALID. (5)
1.1.5 The supplier increased the cost of ingredients and packaging by 12%. Sipho
kept his selling price at R35.
Calculate the new number of kotas that Sipho must sell per month to break
                     even. (4)

1.2 The Mthembu household buys prepaid electricity from Lekoa Municipality. The
municipality uses the block tariffs shown in TABLE 2 below.

TABLE 2: PREPAID ELECTRICITY TARIFFS (VAT INCLUDED)

                     BLOCK MONTHLY CONSUMPTION TARIFF (R/kWh)
                     Block 1 0 – 350 kWh 2,45
                     Block 2 351 – 500 kWh 3,10
                     Block 3 more than 500 kWh 3,65

NOTE: The first 350 kWh are charged at the Block 1 tariff, the next 150 kWh at the
Block 2 tariff, and the remaining units at the Block 3 tariff.
1.2.1 The household used 620 kWh of electricity in July. Calculate the cost of
                     the electricity for July. (5)
1.2.2 Mr Mthembu claims that if the household reduces its electricity use in July
by 20%, the cost will decrease by more than 25%.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether his claim is VALID. (6)
1.2.3 The municipality will increase all tariffs by 12,7%. Calculate the new Block
                     1 tariff. (2)
                                                                                                    [33]

QUESTION 2

2.1 The Nkosi family installed a cylindrical plastic water tank to collect rainwater from
          the roof of their house.
                                  diameter = 1,55 m

                                                          height = 2,18 m

          Information about the rainwater collection:

              • The roof area that collects water measures 9 m by 7 m.
              • Only 85% of the rain that falls on the roof reaches the tank.
              • The family uses 180 ℓ of tank water per day.

You may use the following formulae and information:
          Volume of a cylinder = π × radius2 × height, where π = 3,142
          1 m3 = 1 000 ℓ
Volume of rain collected = roof area × rainfall (in metres)
2.1.1 Determine the radius of the tank in metres. (2)
2.1.2 Calculate the capacity of the tank in litres. (5)
2.1.3 Calculate the volume of water (in litres) that will reach the tank after 25
                     mm of rain. (5)
2.1.4 Determine the number of FULL days that a full tank will supply the family
with water, if it does not rain. (3)
2.1.5 Mrs Nkosi says that three rainfall events of 25 mm each will be enough to
                     fill the empty tank.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether her statement is VALID. (4)

2.2 A school wants to paint the inside walls of a classroom. The classroom is 8 m long,
7 m wide and 3 m high. It has TWO doors of 0,9 m by 2,1 m and FOUR windows of
          1,5 m by 1,2 m.

              • The walls need TWO coats of paint.
              • 1 litre of paint covers 8 m2 per coat.
              • Paint is sold in 5 ℓ tins at R649,99 per tin.
              • A painter charges R180 per hour or part thereof, and paints 12 m2 per hour.

You may use the following formula: Area of a rectangle = length × width
2.2.1 Show that the area of the walls to be painted (ONE coat, excluding the
                     doors and windows) is 79,02 m2 . (6)
2.2.2 Determine the number of tins of paint needed for TWO coats. (5)
2.2.3 The school has a budget of R5 000 for the paint and the painter’s labour.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether the budget will be sufficient. (5)
                                                                                                    [35]

3.3.1 Count the number of round tables on the plan. (2)
3.3.2 Each table seats 8 people. The organisers expect 172 learners and 10
                     teachers.
Verify whether there will be enough seats for everyone. (3)
3.3.3 The dance floor measures 30 mm by 30 mm on the plan. Allowing 0,5 m2
per dancer, calculate the maximum number of people that can dance on the
dance floor at the same time. (4)
3.3.4 Fire regulations allow a maximum of one person per 1,2 m2 of floor area.
The hall is 24 m long and 15 m wide.
Calculate the maximum number of people allowed in the hall. (3)
                                                                                                       [30]

4.2.3 The teacher claims that more than 70% of the learners obtained at least
                       50%.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether her claim is VALID. (4)
4.3 ANNEXURE C in the ADDENDUM shows a graph that School P used on a banner
to advertise its results. Explain why the graph may be misleading. (2)
                                                                                                          [30]

QUESTION 5

5.1 Thandi wants to buy a laptop with a marked price of R12 999. She considers the
          following options:

              • OPTION 1: Pay cash and receive a 5% discount.
              • OPTION 2: Hire purchase: a 10% deposit, followed by 24 monthly instalments
                of R620.
              • OPTION 3: A store loan for the full marked price at 18% p.a. simple interest
                over 2 years.

          You may use the following formula: A = P(1 + i × n)
5.1.1 Calculate the cash price of the laptop (OPTION 1). (2)
5.1.2 Calculate the total amount paid for the laptop under OPTION 2. (3)
5.1.3 Calculate the total amount that will be repaid under OPTION 3. (3)
5.1.4 Thandi says that OPTION 2 costs more than 30% more than OPTION 1.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether her statement is VALID. (4)
5.2 Instead of buying now, Thandi decides to invest R11 000 at 8,5% p.a. interest,
compounded annually, for 3 years. She expects the cash price of the laptop (OPTION
          1) to increase with inflation at 4,5% per year.
Thandi states that after 3 years she will have enough money to pay cash for the laptop.
Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether her statement is VALID.
          You may use the following formula: A = P(1 + i)n (6)
5.3 The manufacturer states that 3% of laptops develop a fault in the first year.
5.3.1 A store sold 2 400 of these laptops. Calculate the number of laptops
expected to develop a fault in the first year. (2)
5.3.2 Express the probability of a laptop developing a fault in the form “1 in …”
(rounded to the nearest whole number). (2)
                                                                                                    [22]
                                                                                          TOTAL: 150
