            LETTER DEFINITION
A The value below which 75% of the values of an ordered data set lie
B An amount subtracted from the income tax payable, which depends
on the age of the taxpayer
C The situation when the total income is more than the total

D A smaller group selected from a larger group in order to collect data
E A fee charged for providing a service, often calculated as a
percentage of the amount of the transaction
F The value below which 25% of the values of an ordered data set lie

QUESTION 3

3.1 A Mathematical Literacy teacher asked the 15 learners in class 12A how many hours
they had spent studying during the week before the preparatory examination. The data
          is given below.

                           12 8 31 6 11 14 9 15 4 12 8 16 10 12 7

The study hours of the learners in class 12B are summarised in the box-and-whisker
plot on ANSWER SHEET 3.1.5 in the ANSWER BOOK:
               Minimum: 3 hours; Lower quartile: 6 hours; Median: 9 hours;
Upper quartile: 13 hours; Maximum: 18 hours
Use the information above to answer the questions that follow.
3.1.1 Arrange the study hours of class 12A in ascending order. (2)
3.1.2 Calculate the mean number of hours studied by the learners in class 12A. (3)
3.1.3 Determine the median number of hours studied by class 12A. (2)
3.1.4 Calculate the interquartile range (IQR) of the study hours of class 12A.
You may use the following formula: Interquartile range (IQR) = Q3 −Q1 (4)
3.1.5 Draw a box-and-whisker plot of the study hours of class 12A on ANSWER
SHEET 3.1.5 in the ANSWER BOOK. (4)
3.1.6 The teacher stated that the study hours of class 12A are more consistent
than the study hours of class 12B.
Verify, using the interquartile ranges of the two classes, whether her
                     statement is VALID. (3)
3.2 A shoe store in Rustenburg sells school shoes and takkies (sneakers). ANNEXURE
B in the ANSWER BOOK shows a graph of the number of pairs of school shoes and
takkies sold per month during 2025.
Use ANNEXURE B to answer the questions that follow.
3.2.1 Name the type of graph shown on ANNEXURE B. (2)
3.2.2 Determine the range of the number of pairs of takkies sold per month. (2)
3.2.3 Calculate the percentage decrease in the number of pairs of school shoes
sold from January 2025 to February 2025. (3)
3.2.4 Give ONE possible reason why the most pairs of school shoes were sold in
                     January. (2)
3.2.5 A month in 2025 is selected at random. Determine, as a percentage, the
probability that MORE than 300 pairs of takkies were sold in that month. (3)
                                                                                                   [30]

QUESTION 4

4.1 Thabo runs a solar-powered cellphone-charging station at a taxi rank in Soweto. His
costs and income are as follows:

              • Fixed monthly cost (rental of the space and the charging stand): R600
              • Variable cost: R4 per phone charged
              • He charges his customers R12 per phone charge.

TABLE 3 below shows Thabo’s total monthly costs and income for different numbers
of phones charged. Some values have been omitted.

TABLE 3: THABO’S MONTHLY COSTS AND INCOME

                  Number of phones charged (n) 0 25 50 75 100 150

Use TABLE 3 and the information above to answer the questions that follow.
          4.1.1 Determine the missing values A and B. (4)
4.1.2 Write down a formula that Thabo can use to calculate his total monthly cost
                      in the form:
                      Total cost = . . . (2)
4.1.3 The graph of Thabo’s monthly income is drawn on ANSWER SHEET 4.1.3
                      in the ANSWER BOOK.
Use TABLE 3 to draw the graph of his total monthly cost on the same set
of axes. Label your graph. (4)
4.1.4 Use the graphs on ANSWER SHEET 4.1.3 to write down the number of
phones Thabo must charge per month to break even. (2)
4.1.5 Thabo claims that he will make a profit of more than R1 500 in a month in
                      which he charges 280 phones.

4.2 The Lethabong Local Municipality surveyed 200 of the 18 400 households in the
municipality about their monthly water usage in winter (July 2025) and in summer
(January 2026). The municipality uses the block tariffs in TABLE 4 below.

TABLE 4: WATER TARIFFS FOR 2025/2026 (EXCLUDING VAT)

BLOCK MONTHLY WATER USAGE TARIFF PER kℓ
                           1 0 – 6 kℓ R0,00

          NOTE:

              • A fixed basic charge of R95,00 (excluding VAT) is added to the water bill every
                month.
              • VAT of 15% is added to the total of the water charges and the basic charge.

ANNEXURE C in the ANSWER BOOK shows a graph of the number of surveyed

Use TABLE 4, ANNEXURE C and the information above to answer the questions
          that follow.
4.2.1 State whether the 200 households represent a sample or the population of

4.2.4 A surveyed household is selected at random. Determine, as a decimal, the
probability that this household used 15 kℓ or less of water in summer. (2)

Use TABLE 5 and the information above to answer the questions that follow.
5.1.1 State whether the South African rand is stronger or weaker than the US
                     dollar. (2)
          5.1.2 A full-day catamaran tour costs 2 950 MUR per adult and 1 475 MUR per
                     child.
Calculate, in rand, the total cost of the tour for the whole family. (3)
5.1.3 Mrs Ndlovu buys 20 000 MUR at a bank in South Africa. The bank charges
a commission of 1,75% on the rand value of the foreign currency bought.
Calculate the total amount, in rand, that she will pay for the 20 000 MUR,
                     including the commission. (4)
5.1.4 Mrs Ndlovu budgeted R85 000 for the holiday. The family has to pay the
                     following:

                           • Holiday package (flights and hotel): R68 400
                           • The 20 000 MUR bought in QUESTION 5.1.3, including the
                             commission
                           • Travel insurance: R345 per person

She claims that she will have more than R7 000 of her budget left after
                     paying for these items.
