QUESTION 1

1.1       Solve for x:
          1.1.1      x(3x + 8) = 0                                                                    (2)
          1.1.2      2x(x − 3) = 4     (correct to TWO decimal places)                                (4)
          1.1.3      x2 − 2x − 8 > 0                                                                  (3)
1.2       Given: 2x + y = 5 and xy − 2 = 0
          1.2.1      Make y the subject of the equation 2x + y = 5.                                   (1)
          1.2.2      Hence, solve for x and y simultaneously.                                         (5)
1.3 The power (P) dissipated in an electric heating element is given by the formula:

                                                       V2
                                                  P=
                                                       R
          Where: P = power (W)
                 V = potential difference (V)
                 R = resistance (Ω)
          1.3.1 Make V the subject of the formula. (2)
          1.3.2      Hence, calculate the numerical value of V if P = 60 W and R = 240 Ω.             (2)
1.4       Express 45 as a binary number.                                                              (1)
1.5       Evaluate 1011012 + 11102 and leave your answer as a binary number.                          (2)
                                                                                                     [22]

          of 5 years.                                                                                (3)
5.2 A bank offers a nominal interest rate of 9,6% per annum, compounded monthly.
          Calculate the annual effective interest rate. (3)
5.3 The number of learners registered on an online study platform grew from 12 000 to
          20 000 over a period of 6 years. Determine the annual compound growth rate. (4)
