MAPUNGUBWE – THE HILL OF THE JACKAL
Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape was declared a World Heritage Site in 2003. It lies in the
far north of South Africa, where the Limpopo and Shashe rivers meet, close to the borders
with Botswana and Zimbabwe.
About 800 years ago, Mapungubwe was the centre of one of the largest kingdoms in southern
Africa. Its people traded gold and ivory with traders from the east coast of Africa in exchange
for glass beads and cloth from places as far away as India and China. Archaeologists found
a small golden figure of an animal in a royal grave on top of Mapungubwe Hill. The kingdom
was abandoned in the late 1200s, possibly because of changes in the climate.

                         ASH CLOUD GROUNDS EUROPEAN FLIGHTS
A volcano erupted under a glacier in Iceland, sending a huge cloud
of fine volcanic ash high into the air. Winds carried the ash over the
United Kingdom and northern Europe. Because ash can damage aircraft
engines, airports in many countries closed their airspace for almost a
week. Thousands of flights were cancelled and hundreds of thousands
of passengers, including South African tourists, were stranded at airports
          around the world.

                  ’Disappointing stay’
I booked a sea-facing room, but we were given a room facing the
parking area. We waited 40 minutes at reception to check in and the
receptionist did not even greet us or apologise. The breakfast was
excellent, but I will not be staying here again.
