FROM THE VILLAGE TO THE TOWN
Thandi grew up in a small village 80 km from Mthonjeni. After three years of drought,
the family’s crops failed and there was no work in the village. The nearest clinic was
a two-hour walk away. Thandi’s cousin told her that the factories in Mthonjeni were
hiring workers and that the town had a hospital and a college.
Thandi now lives in zone E, where she built a shack from corrugated iron. Many new
arrivals have moved there in the past five years.

QUESTION 6

Read the extract and study the graph below on transport in Lwazi, a fictional city.

                                                       STUCK IN TRAFFIC IN LWAZI
Every working day about 250 000 people travel into the centre of Lwazi. Most of them
live in suburbs and townships more than 20 km from their workplaces. Many
commuters leave home before 05:30 to reach work on time, and some spend almost
a quarter of their wages on transport.
In the morning and evening rush hours the main roads are blocked by cars, taxis and
buses. Exhaust fumes hang over the city on windless days. The city council plans to
build bus lanes, a park-and-ride centre next to the highway and safe cycle lanes.
[Source: Examiner’s own case study (fictional city)]

negative effects of traffic congestion on people AND the environment,
and suggest ways in which the city can encourage more people to use
           public transport.                         (4 x 2)                                                             (8)
