The first drops fall, soft and slow,
 tapping, tapping, high and low.
Then the thunder rolls and the wind blows wild,
we run and spin like a laughing child.
The storm grows tired, the drops grow few –
the sky is still, and washed, and new.
                                                                        [Examiner’s own poem]

                     under the following headings:
4.3.1 Beginning: the starting formation/shape of the dancers and how
                     the dance begins (2)
4.3.2 ONE locomotor movement AND ONE non-locomotor movement
that you will use, and the line of the poem that each movement
                     shows (2)
4.3.3 How you will use a change of LEVEL (1)
4.3.4 How you will use repetition OR canon in the sequence (2)
4.3.5 Ending: how stillness will be used to end the dance, and why it
                     suits the poem (2)

QUESTION 5
Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow.

                               DANCING OUT OF THE DUST
When Ayanda Mthembu was 12, she watched a group of older boys practise pantsula
moves on a dusty soccer field in KwaNobuhle, near Kariega. “Their feet moved so fast
that dust rose like smoke,” she remembers. Today, at 24, she leads the Ikhwezi Youth
Dance Collective, a group of 18 young dancers who rehearse in a community hall three
 afternoons a week.
The group mixes the quick footwork of pantsula with the floor work, lifts and contact work
of contemporary dance. Their newest piece, Water Is Life, was inspired by a drought that
left their community without running water for weeks. The dancers use empty plastic
buckets as props and as drums, and the dance ends with all 18 dancers frozen in a still
image, holding the buckets above their heads.
Ayanda studied dance at a university and worked as a dance teacher and as a
choreographer for television adverts before she started the collective. Two former
members now work as a dance teacher and as a lighting technician at a theatre. “Dance
keeps young people busy and away from drugs and crime,” Ayanda says. “It teaches
 discipline, teamwork and confidence.”
In September, the collective performed Water Is Life at a national dance festival, and they
have been invited to perform at schools in the Eastern Cape next year.
[Examiner’s own case study. The people and the dance group are fictional.]

(A school corridor during break. LERATO (15) stands alone at her locker, staring at her
phone. NANDI and SIPHO enter, laughing.)
NANDI: (loudly, pointing at LERATO) There she is! The star of the group chat!
SIPHO: (uncomfortable, looking at the floor) Nandi, leave it. It’s not funny any more.
NANDI: Not funny? Two hundred people liked that photo. (She holds up her phone.)
LERATO: (turning slowly, her voice shaking) You took that picture when I was crying. Do
you know what it feels like when the whole school laughs at you?
NANDI: (shrugging) It’s just a joke. Relax.
LERATO: (stepping forward, voice growing stronger) A joke is when everybody laughs. I
am not laughing. (Pause.) Delete it. Now.
(Silence. SIPHO looks from one girl to the other. Slowly, he takes out his own phone,
presses a button and holds it up.)
SIPHO: I’ve left the group. I’m reporting the photo.
(NANDI stares at him. Lights fade.)

QUESTION 14
Read the article below and answer the questions that follow.

                              FROM GIYANI TO THE WORLD
Rirhandzu “Keys” Mabunda grew up in Giyani, Limpopo, where her grandmother sang in
the church choir and her uncle played the guitar at weddings. At 13 she taught herself to
play on an old keyboard that a neighbour gave her. “I watched videos on my phone and
copied the chords until my fingers hurt,” she says.
After school, she studied music theory and sound engineering at a community arts centre.
There she learnt to read staff notation and tonic sol-fa, to record and mix songs, and to
protect her music by registering her songs with a collecting society, so that she is paid
royalties every time her songs are played on radio or streamed.
Today Rirhandzu is a pianist, songwriter and music producer. Her amapiano tracks
combine jazz piano chords with the deep log-drum bass of the genre, and she often adds
xibelani rhythms and Xitsonga lyrics. Her debut album was nominated for a music award
this year. She works with a DJ, a sound engineer and a manager who organises her
 concerts.
Rirhandzu is worried about music piracy. “When people share illegal copies of my songs, I
lose the money that pays my band and my studio,” she explains. She now runs free piano
classes for teenagers in Giyani on Saturdays.
[Examiner’s own article. The musician is fictional.]

14.1 Name the music genre of Rirhandzu’s tracks. (1)
14.2 Name the instrument that Rirhandzu plays AND the instrument family to
         which it belongs. (2)
14.3 Explain the term royalties. (2)
14.4 Identify TWO careers in the music industry, other than pianist, that are
         mentioned in the article. (2 x 1) (2)
14.5 Explain how music piracy affects musicians like Rirhandzu. (2)
14.6 In your opinion, why is it important for a young musician to learn to read
         music notation? (1)
                                                                                               [10]

QUESTION 19
Read the article below and answer the questions that follow.

                               WIRE, BOTTLE TOPS AND DREAMS
Nomvula Khumalo collects what other people throw away. On the beaches and streets of
Durban she picks up bottle tops, old telephone wire, plastic bottles and pieces of driftwood.
In her small studio in Umlazi, these found objects become life-size animals and people.
Nomvula learnt to weave telephone wire from her grandfather, who made colourful wire
baskets to sell to tourists. “At first I made baskets and bowls, like him,” she says, “but then
I wanted to make art that tells a story.” Before she starts a large sculpture, she makes a
small maquette. She then builds a strong armature from steel wire and covers it with
woven telephone wire and thousands of bottle tops.
Her best-known work, a life-size sea turtle covered in blue and green bottle tops, was
displayed outside a shopping centre to make people think about plastic pollution in the
ocean. “Every bottle top on that turtle is one that did not end up in the sea,” Nomvula
 explains.
She now teaches wire-weaving to young people in her community, who sell their work at
 craft markets.
[Examiner’s own article. The artist is fictional.]

19.1 Name TWO materials (media) that Nomvula uses in her sculptures. (2 x 1) (2)
