QUESTION 1

Answer the questions set on the comprehension passage below.

Celebs get in on the Soweto Derby

DJ Tira, Oskido announced as ambassadors

                                      Lerato Mbangeni

1 The age-old rivalry between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs has been reignited, a
mere 17 days before the much anticipated Soweto Derby.
The Carling Black Label Cup will be contested by two of Mzansi’s popular teams on
August 1, but the smack-talking part of the bout has begun in earnest.

2 Yesterday, a meeting between legends and celebrities was held at the FNB Stadium,
where Carling Black Label revealed the ambassadors of each team. And when it came to
celebrities, legendary record producer Oskido donned his red Pirates shirt with glee,
while popular record label boss DJ Tira showed his love for Kaizer Chiefs…

3 Tira spoke proudly about his team, saying “I love Chiefs and I’m happy and excited that
they chose me to represent them. I love everything about the brand and all I know is that
      we’re beating Pirates 2–0 on August 1st.”

4 He warned Oskido to watch out for Kaizer Chiefs’ players Bernard Parker and Simphiwe
Tshabalala, reminding all that the pair always scored against Orlando Pirates.

5 Orlando Pirates legend Edward ‘Magents’ Motale joined Oskido in a red Pirates jersey
along with popular actor Thulani Didi who played Popeye in Zone 14. Didi’s co-star Kere
Nyawo, who played Spinach, was also present wearing his Chiefs T-shirt, alongside
      Kaizer Chiefs legend Thabo Mooki.

6 “We had to examine the makings of a true legend and champion and, after careful
scrutiny, DJ Tira and Oskido fit the bill,” said the spokesperson.
Fans are given the chance to select the starting 11 players to take part in the pre-season
match and can make substitution changes on match day by voting in the players they
      believe will win the game.
                                                                  (Adapted from thenewage.co.za)

QUESTION 2

We’ll fight for every cup – Papic

                                       by Ezekiel Kekana

1 FOLLOWING their impressive performance in their last campaign, Polokwane City is
aiming for more honours in the upcoming ABSA Premiership season.

2 Polokwane City, who sensationally won the ABSA Premiership Q-2 Innovation, will be
aiming to win at least one cup and finishing in the top eight, coach Kostadin Papic says.

3 Papic says the team’s objective in the upcoming season is to play attractive football while
     challenging for silverware.

4 “We will fight for every cup that will be on offer next season. I believe I have quality players
who can help me achieve this,” Papic says.

5 The 55-year old former Orlando Pirates mentor says he will reinforce the squad with three
more players signing before the season starts.

6 The Limpopo outfit have already secured the services of former Kaizer Chiefs left-back,
Punch Masenamela from Mamelodi Sundowns and Junior Ngobe and Nazier Jacobs from
National First Division clubs Milano FC and Witbank Spurs, respectively.

7 The club is also trying to hold onto their star player, Cole Alexander, who has attracted
interest from league champions Kaizer Chiefs and big spenders Mamelodi Sundowns.

8 The team has already lost the services of Roger Majafa, who has since joined Pirates,
while defenders Vukile Mngqibisa and Kabelo Lichaba will be plying their trade at the
     University of Pretoria.

9 Meanwhile, the club is still at loggerheads with striker Roggert Nyundu, who says he has
no contract with the club despite them insisting that he has signed a three-year contract
     with them.

10 The matter is now being mediated by the South African Football Players’ Union after it was
revealed that the player was getting a mere R5 000 a month.

                                      Doing it her way
                                       by Sian Griffiths
Soul Surfer is the true story of a teen who overcame a shark attack.

On the morning Bethany Hamilton’s life changed forever, it was a perfect day at sea. The
13 year old was lying on her red, white and blue board, dangling an arm idly over the side,
waiting for the surf to get up in the deep ocean waters of Hawaii.

Suddenly a grey shape flashed to the left of the teenager’s board. A 4.5 metre tiger shark
lurched upwards, biting cleanly through her left arm, just below the shoulder, and taking a
chunk out of her board.

The teenager called out to her friend Alana who was surfing a few metres away. “I just got
attacked by a shark.” As the sea became red with blood, a group of surfers paddled wildly to
take Bethany back to shore. The long sleeve of a surfing jersey was tied around the stub of
Bethany’s arm as a makeshift tourniquet. A surfboard leash was also used to stem the flow of
blood.

Bethany lost 60% of her blood and was drifting in and out of consciousness. When she came
to, her doctors described her as a “living miracle”.

Her story circulated around the world, as the tales of shark attack victims invariably do. But
instead of being a 24-hour sensation, quickly forgotten, the tale of the teenager with the surf-
chick looks was turned into a book and then into a movie.

The phrase Soul Surfer describes someone who surfs for the sheer pleasure of it. Bethany has
achieved a lot after she was attacked on the 31 st October 2003. She became one of the 25 top
female professional surfers in the world, despite having only one arm with which to paddle,
push and balance.
