                                Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS TO MARKERS
1. Candidates are required to answer ALL the questions.
2. These marking guidelines serve as a guide to markers. Some responses may require
the marker’s discretion; accept any other relevant, well-substantiated answers.
3. Assess candidates’ responses as objectively as possible.

MARKING THE COMPREHENSION AND VISUAL LITERACY QUESTIONS
 • Because the focus is on understanding, incorrect spelling and language errors in
responses should not be penalised unless such errors change the meaning. (Errors must
   still be indicated.)
 • For open-ended questions, no marks are awarded for YES/NO or I AGREE/I DISAGREE
alone. The reason/substantiation is what should be credited.
 • When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole sentence, mark it
correct provided the correct word is underlined/highlighted.
 • When TWO points are required and a range is given, mark only the first TWO.
 • For multiple-choice questions, accept the letter of the correct answer AND/OR the answer
   written out in full.
 • Where a quotation is required, do not accept a misquotation or a paraphrase.
MARKING THE LANGUAGE QUESTIONS (SECTION D)
 • Spelling must be correct in answers where the candidate has to rewrite or change words
   or sentences.
 • If the candidate rewrites the sentence correctly but makes a new error elsewhere in the
sentence, do not award the mark.

incorrect. Do not accept more or fewer than four words. Do not
accept quotations from outside paragraph 4 (e.g. ‘Lerato was not
discouraged’ is in paragraph 3). (2)

1.7 1.7.1 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
Yes. Learners can see and touch what they study✓, e.g. they study
soil and insects in Natural Sciences and measure the beds to
calculate area and perimeter in Mathematics.✓
                                                     OR
No. Learners waste time outside/working in the garden takes time
away from lessons✓, and they can learn the same work from books
                     in the classroom.✓
NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES/NO or AGREE/DISAGREE
alone. Award 2 marks for a well-substantiated answer and 1 mark
for a partly substantiated answer. (2)
         1.7.2 ‘a small idea can grow like a seed’✓
NOTE: Accept ‘grow like a seed’. (1)
1.8 FACT✓ (1)
1.9 1.9.1 Figuratively.✓
The future cannot really feel hunger. Lerato means that more and
more people will need food in the years to come, so there will be a
                     great need for farmers.✓
NOTE: Do not award a mark for ‘figuratively’ if the explanation is
                     incorrect. (2)
         1.9.2 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
No. Young people like Lerato are farming successfully✓ and they are
strong, have new ideas and can use technology to farm better.✓
                                                     OR
Yes. Farming is hard physical work✓ and most young people today
prefer to work in offices or with computers.✓
NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES/NO or AGREE/DISAGREE
alone. Award 2 marks for a well-substantiated answer and 1 mark
for a partly substantiated answer. (2)
1.10 B/inspire readers with the story of a learner’s success.✓ (1)
1.11 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
Yes. The corner behind the science block used to be a rubbish dump; now it is
a garden that supplies the vegetables for the learners’ soup✓. The title shows
this change in a few words.✓
                                              OR
No. The title only mentions the soup✓, but the article is also about Lerato’s
courage, the outdoor classroom and her award.✓
NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES/NO or AGREE/DISAGREE alone. Award
2 marks for a well-substantiated answer and 1 mark for a partly substantiated
         answer. (2)

2.2 ‘Grow more. Pay less.’✓
NOTE: Do not accept ‘From Seed to Supper in 60 Days!’ – that is the product’s
headline, not the company’s slogan. (1)
2.3 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g.
Yes. People love getting something for free✓; it makes the kit seem like better
value for money, and the large letters in the star catch the reader’s eye.✓
                                               OR
No. A watering can is cheap/many people already have one✓, so it would not
make me spend R149,99 on the kit.✓
NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES/NO or AGREE/DISAGREE alone. Award
2 marks for a well-substantiated answer and 1 mark for a partly substantiated

                                              OR
No. R149,99 is expensive for seeds that I can buy separately.✓

2.8 Thabo is only playing a farming game (TOMATO TYCOON) on his phone; his
         farm is not real.✓

2.9.3 Instead of food, his mother puts his phone on his plate✓. She takes
his words literally: if his game tomatoes are real, he can eat them for
supper. He cannot eat a game, so he has been taught a lesson/the
                     joke is on him.✓
NOTE: Award 1 mark for what happens and 1 mark for the
explanation of the irony/twist. For the first mark, also accept: Ma says
