NOTES TO MARKERS
• These marking guidelines are not exhaustive. Accept any other relevant, correct answer
that shows understanding, and use professional judgement. Learners’ own examples
from their communities are acceptable.
• Each ✓represents ONE mark.
• Where a set number of answers is asked for (e.g. TWO), mark only the FIRST answers
given, up to that number.
• (2 x 2) items: ONE mark for stating a relevant point and ONE mark for explaining it,
giving an example or showing the effect. A point that is only stated earns ONE mark.
• SECTIONS B and C must be answered in full sentences; SECTION C in paragraphs.
Do not award the explanation mark for single words or lists. Answers in SECTION C
written in point form: award a maximum of HALF the marks for that bullet.
• SECTION C: if a candidate answered all THREE questions, mark only the first TWO
questions answered.
• Do not award marks for repeated points or penalise the same error twice.

QUESTION 5: VIOLENCE AT SCHOOL
Bullet 1 Violence: the use of physical force, threats or power that harms or
is likely to harm/injure another person (physically, emotionally or
psychologically) ✓
Example (any ONE from the extract): fighting after school;
slapping/kicking a learner; carrying knives to threaten others; gang
recruitment/intimidation; sharing a video of an assault
(cyberbullying) ✓
(1 + 1) (2)
Bullet 2 Safety: learners can be injured or killed, e.g. by knives or gang
members ✓, so they feel unsafe and afraid at school ✓
Learners may be recruited into gangs ✓, which exposes them to
crime, drugs and more violence ✓
Learning: learners who are afraid stay away from school
(absenteeism) ✓, so they miss work and their marks drop ✓
Fear and trauma make it difficult to concentrate ✓, which leads to
poor performance/dropping out ✓
Teaching time is lost when fights must be dealt with ✓, so the whole
class falls behind ✓
[ANY TWO – at least ONE effect on safety and ONE on learning]
(2 x 2) (4)
Bullet 3 Report violence and weapons anonymously to teachers/a safety
committee ✓, so that problems are dealt with before someone gets
hurt ✓
The school and SGB can enforce a code of conduct with searches
for weapons and access control at the gate ✓, which keeps gang
members and weapons out ✓
Start peer mediation/conflict-resolution programmes and
anti-bullying campaigns ✓, so that learners learn to solve conflict
without fighting ✓
Work with the police, e.g. Adopt-a-Cop/patrols at the gate after
school ✓, so learners can go home safely ✓
Offer safe after-school activities (sport, clubs) ✓, which keeps
learners away from gangs ✓

Bullet 2 She withdraws from people/hardly speaks to anyone ✓; months
after the death she is isolating herself, which is not part of normal,
slowly improving grief ✓
She has lost interest in netball/activities she enjoyed ✓, a typical
sign of depression ✓
Her sleeping and eating patterns have changed (sleeps all
afternoon, skips meals) ✓, which shows that the problem is
affecting her health ✓
Her marks have dropped in every subject ✓, showing she cannot
concentrate/function normally ✓
She says “Nothing matters anymore” ✓, which shows
hopelessness and could be a warning sign of suicidal thoughts that
needs urgent attention ✓
The symptoms have lasted for three months and are getting worse,
not better ✓, while normal grief slowly becomes easier to cope with
✓

Bullet 3 Talk about her feelings to someone she trusts, e.g. a family member,
friend or teacher ✓, so that she does not carry her pain alone ✓
Keep a routine: eat healthy meals and get enough (but not too
much) sleep ✓, which helps her body and mood to recover ✓
Go back to netball/exercise regularly ✓, as exercise releases
endorphins that lift the mood ✓
Remember her grandmother in a positive way, e.g. write a letter,
keep a journal or memory box ✓, which helps her to express and
accept the loss ✓
Avoid alcohol/drugs as a way to cope ✓, because they make
depression worse ✓
[ANY ONE explained]
(1 x 2) (2)
Bullet 4 ONE mark for the source of help and ONE mark for how it helps.

further help ✓

QUESTION 7: ETHICS IN SPORT
Bullet 1 Sport ethics: the moral principles/rules of right and wrong
behaviour that guide players, coaches, officials and spectators in
sport ✓
Fair play (any ONE example): shaking hands with opponents;
accepting the referee’s decision; helping an injured opponent;
playing within the rules; not cheating; respecting the other team ✓
(1 + 1) (2)
Bullet 2 Doping: it gives the player an unfair advantage over players who
compete honestly ✓; it damages the player’s health and breaks the
rules of the sport ✓
Age-cheating: older, stronger players compete against younger
players ✓, which is unfair, can cause injuries and takes
opportunities away from honest players ✓
Both doping AND age-cheating must be discussed for full marks.

Bullet 3 Draw up a code of conduct for players and spectators, with clear
consequences (e.g. bans) ✓, so everybody knows what behaviour
is expected ✓
Educate players about the dangers of banned substances/drug
testing ✓, so that they make informed, healthy choices ✓
Check birth certificates/ID documents before tournaments ✓, which
prevents age-cheating ✓
Coaches and teachers must be good role models who value effort
and fair play above winning ✓, so learners copy this behaviour ✓
Reward fair play, e.g. a fair-play trophy or certificates ✓, which
motivates good behaviour ✓
Appoint marshals/security and ban spectators who become violent
✓, which protects referees and players ✓
[ANY TWO – at least ONE way aimed at players and ONE aimed
at spectators; if both ways cover only one group, max 2 marks]
