                             Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines

GENERAL MARKING GUIDELINES

  1. One tick (✓) = one mark.
  2. Accept answers that are worded differently but are technologically correct. Accept
     spelling that is clearly understandable.
  3. Where a question asks for a number of answers (e.g. TWO), mark only the first answers
     given, in the order given.
  4. Calculations: award marks for the formula/substitution and for the correct answer with
the correct unit as shown. Apply consistent accuracy (CA): if an incorrect answer from
an earlier part is used correctly later, award the later marks.
  5. Drawings: use the rubrics given. Drawings done freehand on the annexures (without a
ruler) lose the neatness/line-quality mark only.
  6. Answers that appear in brackets ( ) are alternatives or extra information and are not
     required for the mark.

COGNITIVE LEVELS (approximate): Knowledge/recall 30 marks (30%), comprehension and
application 50 marks (50%), analysis, evaluation and design/drawing (higher order) 20 marks
(20%).

SECTION B: STRUCTURES

QUESTION 2
2.1.1 Tension ✓ (1)
2.1.2 Shear ✓ (1)
2.1.3 Torsion ✓ (1)
2.1.4 Compression ✓ (1)
2.2.1 A tender is a formal written offer (proposal) by a company to do a job/supply
goods at a stated price ✓ in reply to an invitation from a client (e.g. the
municipality), who then chooses the best offer. ✓ (2)
2.2.2 Type ✓ with a valid reason ✓, e.g.:

             • Suspension (cable) footbridge – can span 24 m without piers in the
river, so flood water and debris cannot damage the supports; light and
               economical.
             • Truss bridge – strong but light; triangles make it rigid over a long span.
             • Arch bridge – very strong (members in compression); can be built high
               above flood level.
             • Beam bridge on tall concrete piers – simple and cheap; deck high above
the flood level (accept if piers are mentioned). (2)
2.2.3   Any TWO: steel (beams/cables) ✓; reinforced concrete ✓; treated timber;
stone/brick (for the abutments); galvanised steel for hand-rails. (2)
2.3.1 3 000 + 700 = 3 700 N ✓ (1)
2.3.2 3 700 ÷ 2 = 1 850 N ✓ (CA from 2.3.1)
The load is even/symmetrical – the learner stands exactly in the middle, so the
load is shared equally by X and Y. ✓ (2)
2.4.1 Triangulation / cross-bracing (adding a diagonal brace) ✓ (accept: gusset
        plates in the corners) (1)
2.4.2 Sketch of the rectangular frame with a diagonal member (or gussets) forming
        triangles. ✓

(Best answer: the brace runs from the bottom hinge corner up to the top free corner,
so it is in compression.) (1)
                                                                                        [15]
                                                                         TOTAL SECTION B: 15

SECTION C: DESIGN AND GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION

QUESTION 3
3.1 A design brief must say WHAT will be designed/made ✓ and for WHOM/WHY
        ✓, e.g.
“I will design and make a strong, light two-step stool from pine boards ✓ that
learners can use to reach the top shelves in the school library safely. ✓” (2)
3.2 Any THREE further specifications/constraints ✓✓✓, e.g.

             • It must carry a learner of up to 100 kg without bending or breaking.
             • All edges must be rounded and sanded – no splinters or sharp corners.
             • The wood must be sealed with a non-toxic varnish/paint.
             • It must have a hand-hold (slot) so that it is easy to carry.
             • Materials must cost less than a set amount (e.g. R350).
             • It must be completed by a set date (time constraint).
             • It must look neat and match the library furniture.

Do NOT award specifications already given in the scenario (pine, step heights,
        sizes, non-slip, stable). (3)
