INVITATION TO TENDER: PEDESTRIAN FOOTBRIDGE, TENDER No. ML 07/2026

Learners of Thabeng Primary School cross the Sefala River every day to reach school. In summer
the river floods and the stepping stones are covered with fast-flowing water. The municipality invites
registered builders to submit tenders to design and build a safe footbridge across the river.

      • The river is 24 m wide at the crossing point; the bridge deck must stay above the highest flood
        level.
      • The bridge must carry learners, parents and bicycles, and must have hand-rails on both sides.
      • The bridge must be low in maintenance and must not damage the river banks.
      • Building must start within 30 days after the tender is awarded and must be completed within
        5 months.

Closing date for tenders: 30 January 2027.
[Examiner’s own text. Names are fictional.]

2.3 The diagram below shows a simple beam bridge that rests on two supports,
X and Y. The beam weighs 3 000 N (its weight acts at the centre of the beam).
A learner with a weight of 700 N stands exactly in the middle of the bridge.

                                               hinges on the left-hand post

2.4.1 Name a method that can be used to make the gate frame rigid. (1)
2.4.2 Make a simple sketch of the gate frame in your ANSWER BOOK

SECTION C: DESIGN AND GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION
QUESTION 3
Read the scenario below and answer the questions that follow.
SCENARIO
The library of Kgotso Secondary School has tall bookshelves. Learners stand on chairs to
reach the top shelves, and last term a learner fell and was injured. The librarian has asked
the Grade 9 Technology class to design a sturdy two-step stool that learners can use safely
in the library. She gave the following specifications:

      • The stool must be made from pine boards and must be light enough for one learner
        to carry.
      • It must have two steps: the bottom step is 200 mm high and the top step is 400 mm
        high.
      • Each step (tread) is 200 mm deep (front to back) and 450 mm wide.
      • The top surface of each step must not be slippery.
      • The stool must not tip over when a learner stands on the edge of a step.
The side view of the stool is shown below (all dimensions in mm). The stool is 450 mm wide.
                                                     200

                                         200
                                                             400

                               200

                                               400

3.1 Write a design brief for the step stool. (2)
3.2 Apart from the specifications given in the scenario, list THREE further
specifications or constraints that the design should meet. (3)
3.3 On ANNEXURE A, draw an isometric drawing of the step stool to a scale of
1 : 10. Use the isometric grid provided (one grid space represents 50 mm).
Draw the stool as a solid block (ignore the thickness of the boards). Hidden
detail is not required. Do NOT add dimensions. (8)
3.4 On ANNEXURE B, draw a first-angle orthographic projection of the step stool
to a scale of 1 : 10. Draw the FRONT VIEW (the side view shown above), the
TOP VIEW and the LEFT VIEW in their correct positions. Draw the stool as
a solid block (ignore the thickness of the boards). Each square on the grid
represents 50 mm. Show TWO main dimensions on the front view. (9)

SECTION F: PROCESSING
QUESTION 6

6.1 Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow.
From the farm to the shelf
Mrs Nkuna grows mangoes on a small farm near Tzaneen. In the past, many of her mangoes
rotted because she could not sell them all while they were fresh. She now cuts the extra
mangoes into thin slices and dries them on mesh racks in a solar drier. She also turns green
mangoes into atchar by cooking them with spices and oil and packing them in clean glass
jars, and she makes mango jam with a lot of sugar. The jars are sealed while the food is
still hot. Her dried mango slices are packed in sealed plastic bags. Her products can now
 be sold for many months.
                                                                      [Examiner’s own case study.]

6.1.1 Name TWO methods of food preservation that Mrs Nkuna uses. (2)
6.1.2 Explain how drying prevents the mango slices from going bad. (1)
6.1.3 Why are the jars sealed while the food is still hot? (1)
6.2 The plastic bags in which the dried mango is packed carry the recycling code
         below.

                                                 2
                                              HDPE

6.2.1 Write the abbreviation HDPE in full. (1)
6.2.2 Why must plastics be sorted by type before they are recycled? (1)
6.3 Indicate whether each of the following actions is an example of REDUCE,
REUSE or RECYCLE. Write only the answer next to the question numbers
         (6.3.1 to 6.3.3).
6.3.1 Mrs Nkuna collects empty glass jars from her customers, washes
them and fills them with jam again. (1)
6.3.2 Used plastic bags are melted down at a factory and made into plastic
                     chairs. (1)
6.3.3 Mrs Nkuna buys her sugar in 50 kg bags instead of many small
packets, so that less packaging is thrown away. (1)
6.4 Give ONE word for the following: the process of coating iron or steel with a
layer of zinc to prevent rusting. (1)
