1.4 Use Source 1A and Source 1C. Comment on how the information in

1.6 Using the information in the relevant sources and your own knowledge, write

Cold War tensions between the United States of America (USA) and the
             Soviet Union (USSR). (8)

HAVE ON THE CIVIL WAR DURING THE 1970s?

Study Sources 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D and answer the questions that follow.

2.1 Use Source 2A.

2.1.1 What, according to the source, was partly responsible for the

army controlled the borders and was free to move anywhere in the

                                                                                    (2 x 2) (4)

2.1.4 Quote TWO pieces of evidence from the source which suggest that
the Portuguese policy of colonialism changed on 25 April 1974.
                                                                                  (2 x 1) (2)

2.2 Read Source 2B.

2.2.1 Identify THREE Angolan parties in the source that opposed
                      Portuguese colonial rule in the 1950s. (3 x 1) (3)

2.2.2 In the context of a coalition government in Angola, comment on
what is implied by the statement, 'Each liberation movement had
its preference if a nationalist coalition (alliance) should prove
                      impossible'. (2 x 2) (4)

2.2.3 State any TWO steps in the source taken by the Organisation of
African Unity (OAU) before the date of the Angolan independence
                      could be fixed. (2 x 1) (2)

2.3 Read Source 2C.

2.3.1 With reference to the evidence in the source and your own
knowledge, explain why you think that among the three liberation
movements, it would be easy for the MPLA to take control of
Luanda and form the government of Angola. (2 x 2) (4)

2.3.2 Using the evidence in the source and your own knowledge, explain

                                                                                  (1 x 2) (2)

2.3.3 Comment on the usefulness of this source for a historian

2.4 Refer to Sources 2B and 2C. Explain how the information in Source 2B
supports the evidence in Source 2C regarding the regional ethnic divisions
that existed during the Angolan Civil War. (2 x 2) (4)

2.5 Study Source 2D.

2.5.1 Identify TWO pieces of evidence in the source that indicate how
the Portuguese government fuelled the rivalry amongst liberation
movements during the civil war in Angola. (2 x 1) (2)

2.5.2 Using the information in the source and your own knowledge,

                                                                                  (1 x 2) (2)

2.5.3 According to the source, conflicts and absence of cooperation
among the three Angolan liberation movements were based on
                       TWO factors. Name these factors. (2 x 1) (2)

2.5.4 Explain why the FNLA and UNITA depicted their enemy (MPLA) as
a continuation of the colonial system that continued to reproduce
distinctions of race and class in Angola. (1 x 2) (2)

2.6 Using the information in the relevant sources and your own knowledge, write
a paragraph of about EIGHT lines (about 80 words) explaining the impact that
regional ethnic divisions in Angola had on the civil war during the 1970s. (8)
                                                                                                 [50]

QUESTION 3: HOW DID STATE AUTHORITIES IN ALABAMA DEAL WITH THE
NON-VIOLENT CHILDREN'S MARCH DURING THE BIRMINGHAM
                     CAMPAIGN IN 1963?

Study Sources 3A, 3B, 3C and 3D and answer the questions that follow.

3.1 Use Source 3A.

3.1.1 According to the source, why was Birmingham nicknamed
                       'Bombingham'? (1 x 1) (1)

3.1.2 Define the term civil rights activists in your own words. (1 x 2) (2)

3.1.3 Using the information in the source and your own knowledge,
explain why Dr King was imprisoned. (2 x 2) (4)

3.1.4 Quote any TWO ways from the source indicating how the police
                       dealt with the protestors during the Children's March. (2 x 1) (2)

3.1.5 Identify TWO ways in the source in which young black men in the
city's poorest section retaliated to being assaulted and attacked by
                       the police. (2 x 1) (2)

3.2 Study Source 3B.

3.2.1 State any TWO demands in the source that the protestors made
                       during the Children's March of the Birmingham campaign. (2 x 1) (2)

3.2.2 Explain why the presence of Martin Luther King Jr at the Children's
March could have given it some credibility. (2 x 2) (4)

3.3 Refer to Sources 3A and 3B. Explain how these sources support each other
regarding the protests of the Children's March during the Birmingham
             campaign in 1963. (2 x 2) (4)

3.4 Read Source 3C.

3.4.1 According to the source, what did Audrey Faye Hendriks recall
                       about the Children's March? Give TWO responses. (2 x 1) (2)

3.4.2 Comment on why policemen suggested to Audrey Faye that 'she
had been forced to participate' in the Children's March. (2 x 2) (4)

3.4.3 Identify evidence in the source which suggests that conditions for
the children who were placed in police cells were not good for their
                       health. (1 x 1) (1)

3.4.4 Explain the limitations of the source for a historian researching the
                       Children's March during the Birmingham campaign in 1963. (2 x 2) (4)

3.5 Consult Source 3D.

3.5.1 According to the source, who was stunned by the shocking images
of the Birmingham campaign? Give TWO responses. (2 x 1) (2)

3.5.2 Comment on what Gloria Clark implied by the words, 'And I said no
way is he going to define how people are treated in this country
I live in' in the context of how protestors were dealt with during the
                       Birmingham campaign. (2 x 2) (4)

3.5.3 Explain the term desegregate in the context of changes to
                       discriminatory laws in the US in the 1960s. (1 x 2) (2)

3.5.4 What conclusion can you draw from the statement, '… Kennedy
believed it was time to put civil rights at the forefront of his agenda
…' in the context of the impact of the Birmingham campaign?
                                                                                         (1 x 2) (2)

3.6 Using the information in the relevant sources and your own knowledge, write
a paragraph of about EIGHT lines (about 80 words) explaining how state
authorities in Alabama dealt with the non-violent Children's March during the
             Birmingham campaign in 1963. (8)
                                                                                                      [50]
