QUESTION 5

Read the passage below and answer questions that follow.

                             TUBERCULOSIS (TB)

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by germs that are spread from person to
person through the air. Tuberculosis usually affects the lungs, but it can also
affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, the kidneys or the spine. In
most cases, tuberculosis is treatable; however persons with tuberculosis can die
if they do not get proper treatment. The general symptoms of tuberculosis
include feelings of sickness, weight loss, coughing, chest pains or coughing
blood. There is a vaccine to prevent tuberculosis and it is called Bacille
Calmette-Gurin (BCG). It is used in many countries to prevent severe forms of
tuberculosis in children. There is another type of tuberculosis known as multi-
drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

This tuberculosis is resistant to at least two of the best anti-TB drugs, Isoniazed
and Rifampicin. MDR-TB can be prevented by avoiding exposure to known
MDR-TB patients. If one thinks he/she has been exposed to someone with
tuberculosis, one should contact a doctor or local health department.

 QUESTION 6

Read the report below and answer the questions based on it.

A study of sexual relationships amongst teenagers in the Eastern Cape showed
that 60% of the teens were physically assaulted by their partners. Violence was
used by boys to impose the ‘rules’ of the relationship, in particular when a girl
tried to end the relationship or refused to have sex or attempted to check up on
her boyfriend. One boy said he beat his girlfriend because she had told her
friends that he was a ‘bad kisser’. Another boy said he beat his ex-girlfriend
because she told his new partner, out of jealousy, that he was “ugly and not the
 right stuff for the girls”.

[Adapted from a Medical Research Council Report]

6.1 How did the teenagers in the above report express their anger? (2)

6.2 List THREE ways mentioned in the extract which shows that these
teenagers are not emotionally mature enough to handle their anger. (3)

6.3 Suggest an appropriate way to deal with the anger felt by the teenagers. (2)

6.4 What type of a relationship is highlighted in the extract? (1)

6.5 The Medical Research Council interviewed 8 000 teenagers to get the
report. Sixty percent (60%) responded as mentioned in the extract. What
is sixty percent of eight thousand teenagers? Show your calculations. (2)
                                                                                              [10]

 QUESTION 7

forbidden her to eat fast-foods. When Cindy wanted to order a can of Coke,
Stefan orders a beer for her instead. Stefan convinces Cindy that even though
she is not 18 yet, drinking beer would be fine as everyone around her is smoking
and drinking. Cindy did not want to seem childish or embarrass him. The two
danced and laughed. After having their meal, they left in Stefan’s car. On their
way home Stefan stopped the car near an empty piece of land and demanded
 sex from Cindy.

instruction too early. As a result our pupils have no indigenous language
background because they have not been given a thorough grounding in their
mother-tongue.” Thandi’s mother feels that children should be multilingual.

My name is Nhlakanipho Colin Mkhize, currently studying towards a Bachelor
of Science degree, with Physics and Chemistry as my major subjects.
“University was a far-off dream for me as a child growing up with a single
mother,” said Nhlakanipho. “She struggled to put me through my primary
school. Fortunately I was awarded a bursary at Carter High School because I
performed well in my school work. But even with the bursary, the struggle
continued. When I was in matric, my LO teacher gave me a form to apply for a
scholarship. I was not sure if I would get anything. But then I was informed
that I had been awarded a scholarship to study at Rhodes University. The
opportunity has allowed me to dream even bigger! I now wish to pursue further
academic studies in the fields of Physics and Chemistry up to the highest
 level.”

SECTION C: PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT AND MOVEMENT

QUESTION 10

Read the following case study and answer questions based on it.

                           AGGRESSION IN SOCCER

Aggression is normally increased during very important games such as knock-
out tournaments. If a player believes his opponent is going to dribble past him,
he tackles him aggressively. Some players have even been identified as ‘dirty
players’ because of their bad behaviour. It was also noted that players playing
away from home tend to be more aggressive than the home teams. Another
factor that can lead to aggressive behaviour among players is when the
opposition is leading by a large margin. When players are feeling tired after
playing for ninety minutes they lose their temper and play aggressively.

QUESTION 11

Read the following scenario and answer the questions based on it.

                                 LIHLE’S STORY

I am a Grade 9 learner and I feel as though I don’t know how to be as healthy as
I can be. I hardly ever exercise because it is boring to exercise. I prefer
watching TV or spending time with my friends. I am a bit overweight and I know
I should eat better but I like my hamburgers and chips for lunch every day. At
least I don’t smoke or drink alcohol.

11.1 You know that a healthy lifestyle is key, therefore:

Give Lihle at least THREE ideas to motivate him to live a healthy lifestyle. (3)
