Sappi Limited (originally South African Pulp and Paper Industries Limited) was formed in 1936 as a local paper producer in South Africa. Over nearly nine decades, the company has grown into a globally diversified pulp, paper, and woodfibre company with operations in over 20 countries across Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia.
Headquartered in Johannesburg, Sappi produces and sells a wide range of products including printing and writing papers, packaging papers, speciality papers, dissolving wood pulp for textiles, timber products, and chemical cellulose. The company currently employs over 12 000 staff members across its global operations, making it one of South Africa's most significant multinational corporations.
Sappi is at the forefront of the global shift towards sustainable, bio-based products. The company's dissolving wood pulp is used to produce viscose fibre for clothing, while its packaging solutions provide renewable alternatives to plastic. This focus on sustainability and the circular bioeconomy positions Sappi as a forward-looking company that is actively contributing to solving global environmental challenges.
Through their bursary programme, Sappi invests in developing the engineering and scientific talent needed to drive innovation in sustainable manufacturing. The company recognises that its future competitiveness depends on attracting and developing skilled professionals who can optimise complex manufacturing processes, develop new bio-based products, and manage sustainable forestry operations across the value chain.
The Sappi Bursary Programme supports undergraduate students pursuing engineering and forestry qualifications at recognised South African universities. The programme covers seven fields: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Forestry and Wood Science, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering, all at BEng or BSc level.
The bursary may cover tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, accommodation, and a living allowance, with the total value dependent on the student's household income. This means-tested approach ensures that students with greater financial need receive more comprehensive support, while still making the programme accessible to a broader range of applicants.
Bursary recipients have the opportunity to participate in vacation work during the July and December holidays each year. This practical experience is invaluable for engineering students, providing exposure to real industrial operations in pulp and paper manufacturing, forestry management, and chemical processing. Successful completion of vacation work allows students to enter the Sappi Engineer-in-Training programme after graduation, providing a structured pathway into professional engineering practice.
The selection process includes interviews for shortlisted candidates, indicating that Sappi looks beyond academic results to assess candidates' motivation, communication skills, and fit with the company's values and operations. Preference is given to students residing near Sappi's main business operations, which include mills and plantations in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng.
The programme targets students between 17 and 25 years old, from matriculants entering first year through to students already enrolled in their engineering studies. Academic requirements are demanding: 70% minimum in Mathematics and Physical Science, plus 60% in English, reflecting the rigorous technical demands of engineering qualifications.
A qualification funded by Sappi opens doors to careers in one of the world's leading pulp, paper, and woodfibre companies. With global operations in over 20 countries and more than 12 000 employees, Sappi offers diverse career opportunities across multiple engineering disciplines and geographic locations.
