TEXT A
MAKING TREES SING AGAIN
By Dawne Haddad
1 'WHAMKILEKILE! WELCOME to Maingard Guitars. Please leave a message.
Ngiyabonga gakhulu. Thank you.' That is the message of greeting on Marc
Maingard's answering machine. And a welcoming world it is. Marc's world. 'The
craftsman at the tip of Africa.’
2 This world-renowned guitar maker is originally from Durban. 'My mother was a
pianist and composer and | also had formal training in classical music, played the
piano and violin. But look at this,’ says Marc. Out comes a huge sheet of paper.
'This is the Maingard family tree, where | can trace my lineage back to 1356. Some
of my ancestors were lute and viol makers to the French royalty.’
3 Down the wooden stairs we go to the house and workshop he built himself. And it is
here in the cosy studio, the walls bristling with clamps, chisels, patterns and files,
that his now famous guitars are born.
4 Marc makes classical as well as steel string guitars. The wood for the top is selected
according to the client's wish, and each guitar will sound quite different. But it is the
delicate inlays that make Marc's work unique. Butterflies, fairies and mermaids
adorn his pieces. They are made of mother of pearl, abalone, gold and silver and
are all done by hand. That also makes them collectors' items.
5 The purfling or decorative strip around the edges of the guitar is a herringbone
pattern of multi-coloured woods and thin strips of abalone, while the rosettes around
the soundhole, with their triangles of ebony and maple, have a distinct Ndebele look.
6 Marc says that playing the guitar certainly helps in the making of them. 'It is the
attention to detail that musicians appreciate, and which makes the difference
between a good guitar and an excellent one.’
7 Marc has made over 200 guitars and sold them worldwide. Owners of the sought-
after Maingard guitars are South Africa's Jimmy Dludlu and Jonathan Crossley, as
well as American Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills and Nash fame who had this to say
about Maingard guitars: 'l came to South Africa for the concerts and was lucky to
find one of the world's best guitar makers here.'
8 Even the labels inside his guitars tell a story. His trademark 'M' is in one corner.
Then there is the Maingard family crest: an oak bearing two golden acorns, with the
motto Ut Rupes Nostra or ‘like our rock.'
9 For Marc each guitar has its own personality. 'Each piece of wood is a sacrifice from
nature. But it is given rebirth once the guitar is made — and the tree sings again.

TEXT B
THE WONDERS OF GINGER AND GARLIC
BY LEIGH ROBERTSON
Ginger is another spice guaranteed to light your fire. And while its flavour is on the hot
side, ginger imparts a freshness and 'zestiness' to dishes sweet and savoury. The
burn from ginger is slow and mild, allowing for a bolder approach in cooking.
Its health benefits are significant. Ginger helps fight colds and viruses, stimulates the
digestive system and boosts the immune system. It helps get rid of nausea too. More
reason to use it liberally during the colder months of the year.
While ginger appears to have originated in Asia, the ancient Greeks and Romans
favoured it too. It later spread to Europe, where it became popular in the Middle Ages
as a cure for the Plague. Its strong flavour was also used to mask rancid flavours and
smells, and it was discovered that ginger had a tenderizing effect on meat, and also
helped protect food from parasites and bacteria.
Ginger is absolutely essential in curry powders, and adds a special flavour to most
stir-fries and Chinese dishes. The Japanese like it pickled and served with sushi. It
combines excellently with garlic and chilli, works wonderfully in relishes and
marinades, and adds a revitalizing (and flu-busting) zing to fresh juices like carrot.
Garlic, that other essential winter warmer, also goes a long way in keeping seasonal
colds at bay. Certainly no herb has a richer history in folklore and superstition than
garlic. In Shakespeare's time, eating garlic was considered a sign of vulgarity, though
there are some today who still find its odour overwhelming, if not offensive.
The common garlic is a member of the onion family. It has long flavoured the cuisine
of many European countries, especially the Italians and the French.
Garlic is considered nature's antibiotic. It reduces cholesterol. When shopping for
garlic, look for plump, solid bulbs with tight skin. Also remember that ‘small is
beautiful, as the flavour and aroma tend to be much more intense in small bulbs.
Avoid any with green shoots as these will be very strong and have a distinctly anti-
social effect. But if you need to get rid of the odour on your hands after preparing
garlic, rub them with salt before washing.

TEXT D
[From: follow my leaders by Dov Fedler]
TEXTE
As a political cartoonist, Dov Fedler ranks right up there with the greats of the past —
Bob Connolly, Jock Leyden, Abe Berry and Dave Marais. His work combines healthy
cynicism — and a passion for causes — with a delightfully wicked sense of the ridiculous!
This vastly entertaining collection brings together some of his finest cartoons from the
past twenty years.
‘Dov Fedler is often so far ahead that you only get his meaning six months down the
way. He should be declared a National Monument.’ John Robbie.
‘A special rewind of memory — an intelligent and easy unveiling of South African history —
without a sweat of depression.’ Khaba Mkhize

MISS CONGENIALITY
q
[Adapted from [IMAGINE]
In every celebrity interview you read, at some point the writer is guaranteed to
gush about how 'down to earth’ Gwyneth/Sandra/Julia, etc. are. 'So real. So
unpretentious. So unaware of her fame. So un-star-like.' Hello! These women
are actresses, remember?
So, while this may well be true about Sandra Bullock, who is well-known for
being easy-going and genuinely friendly, it's not actually the norm. Most
gorgeous actresses and singers (and a lot of the male variety too), would
have us believe that they're much like their public personas: the fragile, lovelorn
songstress; the sweet, vulnerable girl-next-door in those saccharine romantic
comedies big studios are so fond of. The girl everyone wants to be friends with,
and every guy wants to be with.
Meanwhile, the truth is that stars aren't always, well, sparkling. Their behaviour
is often documented as being less than starry and, sometimes, downright
diva-ish. Here are some of the last people in the world who would receive a
congeniality award — as well as some who actually deserve it.
