The farmhouse is run down. The farmer's appearance is shabby. No — they treat his farm as a picnic place/the man carelessly tosses his cigarette to the earth/they seem to believe that having respect for a farm is simply a matter of shutting gates. (Any 2) The prize bull is the farmer’s most important possession yet he is housed in a muddy enclosure which is surrounded by rusty barbed wire. 4.41 We are told that he glances ‘furtively’ around which means that he is trying to see if anyone might spot him. He also asks the woman to alert him if the farmer should appear. 4.4.2 He is showing off in front of the young woman — wants to impress her with his bravery. (Something similar). The man tried to dodge an attack by the bull and slipped in the mud. The bull then attempted to gore the man. The girl fruitlessly attempted to stop the bull by hurling stones at it while she screeched hysterically in an attempt to draw someone’s attention. The farmer is a taciturn yet tolerant and kind man — he does not engage in conversation yet allows the young couple to picnic on his land. He is decisive and unselfish — shoots his prize bull to save the life of the selfish young man. 4.7.1 It was a prize bull, probably the farmer’s most precious possession, which he had to sacrifice for an uncaring and selfish young man. 4.7.2 He has no idea of the implications of what the farmer has just sacrificed and berates him for taking so long to get there.
