A couple emerged laughing from the car and strolled together towards a shabby old farmer who stood haranguing a worker. ‘Can we picnic on your place?' While he spoke, the man tossed his cigarette to the red earth and ground it underfoot. The woman giggled as the farmer frowned surlily at them. 'Listen, we know all about shutting gates and all that jazz ...' The farmer hesitated. 'Ja,' he grunted, and turning his back, walked slowly towards the house ... The couple returned to the car and, opening the boot, began to take out a picnic basket, rugs and other paraphernalia. It was then that the man noticed it. In a nearby enclosure, fenced with rusty barbed wire, stood the prize bull — bulky winner of local shows, supreme lord of his muddy domain. Glancing furtively about him, the man walked towards the paddock, followed by the woman. 'Tell me if he comes,' he whispered, and vaulted the fence. She watched expectantly as he pulled off his jacket. Holding the garment firmly in front of him, he affected the traditional matador stance. He bowed and minced towards the bull, spurred on by the girl's excited protests. He flourished the coat in front of its nose. He flapped his jacket again and pranced delicately around the animal. The bull remained sturdily indifferent ... The girl giggled: ‘Think you're great, hey?' Angrily, the man picked up a stick from the mud and began to prod the beast. He jabbed its side, its leg, its neck. The animal did not move ... Then the man poked its eye ... The bull bellowed. Bewildered, it tossed its huge head. Lowering its horns, it advanced towards the aggressor, breaking into a lumbering trot. The man tried to dodge the charge, but slipped and sprawled headlong in the mud. Seeing the prone figure in its path, the bull checked and thrust its pointed horns forward to gore the man. He rolled aside but not before one horn had caught his hip, tipping his trousers and leaving a gash in his flesh. Conrintesoved ANIC) 62524 ve

By now the bull, bewildered and snorting, spurred on by a shower of stones, had turned once again to charge. 14 The old farmer raised his gun and deliberately took aim. An echoing shot drowned the girl's screams. The bull sagged and toppled heavily onto its side to lie in bloody abandon in the mud ... 15 By now the man had raised himself on one elbow. Looking blearily at the bent figure of the old farmer standing near his bull, he shouted, 'Why the hell didn't you get here sooner?’ 5.1 5.1.1 Give THREE details from the first paragraph which clearly reveals that the farm on which this story is set is not a prosperous one. 5.1.2 What information about the young couple illustrates that they live a very different life from that of the farmer? 5.2 Paragraph 5 is devoted entirely to the description of the prize bull. 5.2.1 Give a possible reason why the author highlights the bull in this way. -_ Explain the paradox which is evident in the description of the bull. 5.3 Refer to paragraph 3. 5.3.1 Why does the man decide to enter the bull's enclosure? 5.3.2 Present evidence from this paragraph which clearly shows that the man knows he is doing wrong in entering the enclosure. |) How does the girl's initial reaction to the man's pretending to be a matador encourage his behaviour?
