About Hlayiso

Where the documents come from

The library collects these kinds of documents, kept as the original PDF files. Where a document’s publisher is recorded, its page shows it.

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) and lower-grade question papers and memos from the Department of Basic Education (DBE).
  • Tests, preparatory (trial) exams and mock exams set by the nine provincial education departments.
  • Question papers and the memos released by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB). The IEB does not publish a memo for every paper.
  • Curriculum documents: annual teaching plans (ATPs), exam guidelines, practical assessment tasks (PATs), SBA exemplars and study guides.
  • Study guides for TVET college programmes.
  • Hlayiso’s own mock and prediction exams. Their document pages list Hlayiso as the publisher, so you can tell them apart from official papers.

How documents are labelled

Each document’s grade, subject, year, sitting (for example NSC November or Gauteng June), paper number, document type and language come from the folder it is filed in and its file name. Where one of these is missing, it is filled only from clear evidence on the document’s opening pages. Where the sources disagree, the existing label is kept and the disagreement is recorded.

Labels are assigned automatically, and documents are published without being checked one by one by a person, so a label can be wrong. Documents whose labels conflict, or whose file cannot be opened, are kept out of search engine indexes.

How memos are paired with question papers

A document page shows a matching memo, question paper or addendum only when all of these are the same: subject, grade, year, sitting, paper number and language. Documents are only paired within the same exam body, so a CAPS (NSC) paper is never paired with an IEB memo. If nothing matches on every field, no memo is shown; Hlayiso does not guess.

Some files contain the question paper and its memo together. These are labelled “Question paper and memo”.

How duplicates are handled

The same paper is often published in more than one place. Files are compared by a fingerprint of their contents, so identical PDFs are stored once and have one canonical page in the library, instead of several pages for the same file.

Document text

Document pages show the text found in each PDF so that papers can be searched and read in the browser. Text that is already in the PDF is used as is; pages with little text are read with optical character recognition (OCR). OCR can make mistakes, especially in mathematical and scientific notation, so the original PDF is always the authoritative version.

Notes, quizzes and flashcards

Hlayiso’s notes, quizzes and flashcards are written for the CAPS topics of each subject and grade. They are produced with the help of AI, using past papers, memos, textbooks and the subject’s exam guidelines as source material. Hlayiso’s content rules require definitions to use the wording of the exam guidelines where one exists, and quiz questions to use exam command words and mark allocations.

AI-assisted content can contain mistakes, and Hlayiso does not guarantee its accuracy. Check important answers against the official memo or exam guideline.

Corrections

If a document is labelled wrongly, a memo is paired with the wrong paper, a page is missing or a quiz answer is wrong, email support@hlayiso.com with the page link and what is wrong. In a quiz you can also report a question directly, for example as a wrong answer, an unclear question or a typo.

Copyright holders who want a document removed can write to the same address.
