This marking guideline consists of THREE sections:  SECTION A: COMPREHENSION [20 marks]  SECTION B: LANGUAGE STUDY [15 marks]  SECTION C: WRITING [15 marks] 2. Learners are required to answer ALL the questions. 3. Learners should number the questions correctly according to the numbering system used in the question paper. 4. Learners are required to pay special attention to spelling and sentence construction.

Downloaded from hlayiso.com (JUNE 2011) ENGLISH FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE 3 SECTION A: COMPREHENSION The purpose of this task is for learners to:  Critically engage with the texts (i.e. story and table) that they are exposed to taking into account their own opinion and that of the writer.  Express diverse opinions and ideas with substantiation.  Apply language structures and conventions in context. NB.: A marking memorandum is used to assess learner’s response to each text. When assessing responses to text:  You should bear in mind the open-ended nature of the answers.  You should listen to the learner’s own voice and take learner’s opinions into consideration, providing that these are supported by a valid argument.  The marking memo must therefore be interpreted in this light.
