He reads books, comics, magazines, even the label on the tomato sauce bottle. He loves his grandma, Ruby, who lives in Coronation. That’s quite a walk away. One morning Chris is excited because he has to meet his grandma in town and he doesn’t know why. Grandma arrives and takes his hand. They stop at a shop called, ‘Books for Africa’. “Choose any two books,” she says. “Wow! Thanks, Grandma.” He holds the books up for her to see. She puts on her glasses and pages slowly through them. Two weeks later is grandma Ruby’s birthday. Chris is not happy because he does not have money to buy a gift. Chris has an idea. “I will write her a letter telling her how much I love her. I will ask her to read it out loud at the party.” Everybody’s at the party. And on the table! Cake, biscuits, sweets, samoosas and cooldrink. Chris takes the letter from his pocket and gives it to Grandma. “What is this, son?” she says. “It’s a letter, Grandma. Read it out loud.” “I don’t have my glasses,” says Grandma. “I’ll fetch them for you.” “Leave your grandma alone, she can’t read,’ says his mom. Chris is surprised. “But I can read it to her”, he says. And he does. 1.1 Where does Grandma Ruby live? (1) 1.2 How do you know that Chris really loves reading?
