Grade 12 Geography is examined in two 3-hour papers of 150 marks each, written on separate days: Paper 1 covers climate and weather and geomorphology, Paper 2 covers settlements and the economic geography of South Africa, and both end with a 30-mark mapwork question.

How is the Grade 12 Geography exam set out?
Each paper has three compulsory questions: two 60-mark theory questions in Section A and one 30-mark mapwork question in Section B.
| Paper | What it covers | Marks | Time | 2026 NSC date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Section A: climate and weather, geomorphology (2 × 60 marks). Section B: mapwork (30 marks) | 150 | 3 hours | Thursday 29 October 2026, 09:00 |
| Paper 2 | Section A: rural and urban settlements, economic geography of South Africa (2 × 60 marks). Section B: mapwork (30 marks) | 150 | 3 hours | Thursday 12 November 2026, 09:00 |
- Each 60-mark question starts with 15 marks of short objective questions, then three 15-mark subquestions, and includes an 8-mark paragraph that may not be answered in point form.
- Mapwork uses a 1:50 000 topographic map and a 1:10 000 orthophoto map: 10 marks for map skills and calculations, 12 for interpretation and 8 for GIS.
- Cognitive levels: 25% low order, 50% middle order and 25% high order.
Every Grade 12 paper and its start time is on the 2026 matric exam timetable.
What does each Geography paper cover?
Each theory topic gets one 60-mark question and mapwork gets 30 marks, in both papers.
| Paper | Topic | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Climate and weather: mid-latitude and tropical cyclones, anticyclones and travelling disturbances, valley and urban climates | 60 |
| Paper 1 | Geomorphology: drainage basins, fluvial processes, catchment and river management | 60 |
| Paper 1 | Mapwork linked to physical geography: calculations, interpretation, GIS | 30 |
| Paper 2 | Rural and urban settlements: patterns, urban structure, settlement issues | 60 |
| Paper 2 | Economic geography of South Africa: sectors, agriculture, mining, industry, tertiary and informal sectors | 60 |
| Paper 2 | Mapwork linked to human geography: calculations, interpretation, GIS | 30 |
- The guidelines set two 60-mark theory questions per paper; in November 2025 Question 1 was climate and weather (Paper 1) and settlements (Paper 2).
- Economic geography has rotating prescribed topics. In 2025 these were sugar cane, gold mining and the Dube Trade Port IDZ; confirm the current list with your teacher.
- The tropical cyclone case study should be a recent cyclone that affected southern Africa.
- Calculations need the formula, substitution and unit, and at least one decimal place when no rounding is given.
How do I revise each Geography topic on Hlayiso?
Revise theory from the notes with a labelled sketch for every concept, and do mapwork questions every day.
As of October 2026, Hlayiso has 664 Grade 12 Geography past papers and memos (271 of them memos), 2 057 past exam questions sorted by topic and 29 note sections, all free to read.
| Topic | How to revise | Practise |
|---|---|---|
| Climate and weather | Draw each cyclone at every stage and practise reading synoptic weather maps. | 290 questions |
| Geomorphology | Sketch the stages of meander and oxbow lake formation, and river capture. | 290 questions |
| Rural and urban settlements | Learn the land-use zones on an urban profile and the causes and fixes of urban blight. | 278 questions |
| Economic geography of South Africa | Learn the prescribed product, mineral and IDZ for your year, plus food security and the informal sector. | 237 questions |
| Mapwork | Practise distance, area, gradient, bearing and vertical exaggeration, then GIS terms. | 962 questions |
What is a good six-week Geography revision plan?
Revise one theory topic a week, with a mapwork session every day, and finish with full papers.
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Write a recent Paper 1 and Paper 2, mark them with the memo and list weak topics and calculation types. |
| Week 2 | Climate and weather: cyclones, anticyclones, berg winds and synoptic maps. |
| Week 3 | Geomorphology: drainage basins, fluvial landforms and river management. |
| Week 4 | Rural and urban settlements, including urban profiles and settlement issues. |
| Week 5 | Economic geography: sectors, agriculture, mining, industry, IDZs and SDIs, and the informal sector. |
| Week 6 | Full timed papers, starting with November 2025, with one 8-mark paragraph written in full sentences each day. |
What should I do the night before each Geography paper?
The night before a Geography paper, revise sketches and mapwork formulae for that paper.
- Check whether it is Paper 1 or Paper 2, and the date and 09:00 start time.
- Pack your calculator, pens, pencil, ruler, eraser and protractor; a magnifying glass is allowed.
- Write out the formulae for distance, area, gradient, magnetic bearing and vertical exaggeration from memory.
- Redraw two labelled sketches for the paper, such as a mid-latitude cyclone or an urban profile.
- Read the instruction verbs (describe, explain, suggest) and what each one asks for.
- Go to bed at your usual time.
What mistakes do Geography examiners report?
Examiners reported that in November 2025 many answers did not match the instruction verb, and mapwork and GIS stayed the weakest section.
- Answers that ignore the instruction verb, such as describing when the question says explain.Instead: Underline the verb and answer exactly that.
- Giving a factor without its qualifier, or the qualifier without the factor, in 2- to 8-mark questions.Instead: Write the factor and how or why it matters in one sentence.
- Paragraph questions written in point form.Instead: Write full sentences that link causes and effects.
- Mapwork answers that give definitions or general facts instead of evidence from the map or the named block.Instead: Quote what you see in that block of the map.
- Calculation steps and units left out, and weak GIS answers.Instead: Write formula, substitution, answer and unit, and learn the GIS terms.
- Weak answers on cyclones, oxbow lakes, urban renewal, food insecurity and the informal sector.Instead: Give these topics extra practice questions.
