HERITAGE DAY AT THEMBALETHU Every year on 24 September, the learners of Thembalethu Secondary School, a fictional school in Mpumalanga, celebrate Heritage Day with a dance festival. This year the Grade 8 dance class performed two traditional South African dances: Indlamu, a Zulu dance with high kicks and powerful stamps, and Xibelani, a dance in which the women’s layered skirts swing with quick movements of the hips. To prepare, the learners invited two elders from the community to teach them. “We did not learn these dances from books,” explained Lindiwe, a Grade 8 learner. “Gogo Mkhabela and Baba Ndlovu showed us the steps, and we copied them until we got them right. They also told us the stories behind the dances.” The Indlamu dancers wore animal-skin skirts and carried shields and sticks. The Xibelani dancers wore colourful layered skirts, called xibelani, and beaded necklaces. The dancers were accompanied by drums, whistles, hand clapping and singing. The principal said that the festival helps learners to respect and preserve their heritage. “These dances are used to celebrate, to tell stories and to bring people together,” she said. THE VOICES OF ATTERIDGEVILLE Mr Kabelo Masemola is the conductor of the Atteridgeville Youth Choir, a fictional community choir of 40 teenagers. The choir sings in four voice parts (SATB). Most of their songs are sung a cappella, without any instruments. “We learn new songs from tonic sol-fa,” explains Mr Masemola. “Even learners who cannot read staff notation can read the sol-fa names and sing their part.” The choir’s favourite song is a traditional piece in which a soloist sings a line and the whole choir answers. “The audience always joins in with clapping and ululating,” says Palesa, a 14-year-old alto. Last year the choir reached the final of a national youth choir competition. Mr Masemola works with an accompanist who plays the piano during rehearsals, and with a sound engineer who records the choir. “Singing in a choir teaches teamwork and discipline,” he says. “It also keeps young people off the streets and builds their confidence.” [Examiner’s own article.
