English First Additional Language/P1 2 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines Hlayiso/Mock 2026 INSTRUCTIONS TO MARKERS 1. Candidates are required to answer ALL the questions. 2. These marking guidelines serve as a guide to markers. Some responses may require the marker’s discretion; accept any other relevant, well-substantiated answers. 3. Assess candidates’ responses as objectively as possible. MARKING THE COMPREHENSION AND VISUAL LITERACY QUESTIONS • Because the focus is on understanding, incorrect spelling and language errors in responses should not be penalised unless such errors change the meaning. (Errors must still be indicated.) • For open-ended questions, no marks are awarded for YES/NO or I AGREE/I DISAGREE alone. The reason/substantiation is what should be credited. • When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole sentence, mark it correct provided the correct word is underlined/highlighted. • When TWO points are required and a range is given, mark only the first TWO. • For multiple-choice questions, accept the letter of the correct answer AND/OR the answer written out in full. • Where a quotation is required, do not accept a misquotation or a paraphrase. MARKING THE LANGUAGE QUESTIONS (SECTION D) • Spelling must be correct in answers where the candidate has to rewrite or change words or sentences. • If the candidate rewrites the sentence correctly but makes a new error elsewhere in the sentence, do not award the mark. English First Additional Language/P1 3 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines Hlayiso/Mock 2026 SECTION A: COMPREHENSION QUESTION 1 1.1 On the beach (near her home in Gqeberha)/She picks up litter on the beach.✓ (1) 1.2 C/dedicated.✓ (1) 1.3 She and her father found a young seagull that was tangled in a fishing line and could not fly.✓ She realised that many sea animals are hurt/killed by litter and that nobody rescues them in time.✓ NOTE: The answer must be in the candidate’s OWN words. Award 1 mark for a partly correct answer. (2) 1.4 1.4.1 It is a (two-litre) plastic bottle✓that is stuffed/filled very tightly with clean, dry plastic (until it is as hard as a brick).✓ (2) 1.4.2 Simile✓ (1) 1.4.3 FALSE✓ ‘the plastic is locked away safely’✓ NOTE: Do not award a mark for FALSE if the quotation is incorrect. Also accept: ‘Instead of blowing into the sea’. (2) 1.5 1.5.1 teased✓ (1) 1.5.2 hurt✓ (1) 1.5.3 At first they teased her/made fun of her/called her ‘the bin girl’.✓ Today many learners support her: thirty-five learners have joined her eco-club and each member brings an ecobrick every month.✓ NOTE: Award 1 mark for each side of the comparison. Also accept: today learners join/support her club; she is no longer teased. (2) 1.6 Two benches for the playground.✓ A reading corner in the (school) library.✓ (2) 1.7 It is better not to buy plastic at all/to use less plastic✓than to clean up or recycle plastic afterwards; plastic that is never bought can never become litter/end up in the sea.✓ NOTE: Award 1 mark for a partly correct answer. (2) 1.8 A/a teenager who helps to protect the sea from plastic.✓ (1) Copyright reserved Please turn over
English First Additional Language/P1 4 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines Hlayiso/Mock 2026 1.9 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g. Yes. She does not give up when people tease her. She does something practical about a problem instead of only complaining, and she inspires others to join her. OR No. Most teenagers do not have time to collect rubbish every weekend; she could be seen as too extreme. NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES/NO or AGREE/DISAGREE alone. A candidate can score 1 mark for an answer that is not well-substantiated. (2) TOTAL SECTION A: 20 SECTION B: VISUAL LITERACY QUESTION 2 2.1 ‘Refill. Reuse. Rethink.’✓ (1) 2.2 ‘Sip’ means to drink (slowly), and the product is a drinking/water bottle.✓ ‘Cycle’ suggests something that goes round and is used again; the bottle is refilled and used again and again instead of being thrown away.✓ (2) 2.3 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g. Yes. The free cloth bag/the low price of R89,99 attracts teenagers; it fits in every school bag; it keeps drinks ice-cold; teenagers who care about the environment will want to stop using single-use plastic. OR No. R89,99 is too expensive for most teenagers; the advert has no pictures of young people/nothing that is fun or ‘cool’; teenagers are used to buying cheap plastic bottles. NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES/NO or AGREE/DISAGREE alone. A candidate can score 1 mark for an answer that is not well-substantiated. (2) 2.4 Visual clue (any ONE): the sea/waves; the sand; the sun.✓ (1) 2.5 He is careless/does not care about litter/thinks one bottle does not matter because the sea is so big.✓ (1) Copyright reserved Please turn over
English First Additional Language/P1 5 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines Hlayiso/Mock 2026 2.6 Open-ended. Accept a suitable answer, e.g. Yes. FRAME 2 shows that the many ‘only ONE bottle’ throwers together cause a huge amount of pollution that harms sea animals; in FRAME 3 the sea returns the bottles, so Lwazi (and the reader) is forced to face the results of littering. The humour makes the message easy to remember. OR No. The sea cannot really send bottles back, so some readers may not take the message seriously. NOTE: Do not award a mark for YES/NO or AGREE/DISAGREE alone. A candidate can score 1 mark for an answer that is not well-substantiated. (2) 2.7 B/shocked✓ (1) TOTAL SECTION B: 10 SECTION C: SUMMARY QUESTION 3 WAYS TO USE LESS PLASTIC AT HOME QUOTATIONS POINTS 1 ‘take your own cloth bags with you’ Take your own cloth bags when you go shopping. 2 ‘choose loose fruit and vegetables instead of those that are packed in plastic trays’ Choose loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packed ones. 3 ‘Fill a bottle that you can use again with tap water before you leave home.’ Carry a refillable bottle of tap water. 4 ‘say “No, thank you” when you are offered a straw’ Refuse straws when you buy cold drinks. 5 ‘Buy large containers of the things that your family uses often’ Buy large containers of the things you use often. 6 ‘cover leftovers with a plate or keep them in glass jars instead of wrapping them in plastic cling wrap’ Store leftovers under plates or in glass jars, not cling wrap. 7 ‘Empty jam jars and ice-cream tubs can be washed and used again’ Wash and reuse empty jars and tubs. 8 ‘use a bar of soap instead of liquid soap that comes in a plastic bottle’ Use bars of soap instead of liquid soap in plastic bottles. The first seven points above, written as a summary, contain 59 words. MARKING THE SUMMARY • Award 7 marks for any SEVEN of the points above (1 mark per point) and 3 marks for language (see the rubric below). • Mark only ONE point per sentence. Do not award a mark for a point that is out of context or not in a full sentence. • Points 6 and 7 are separate points: 6 = covering/storing leftovers instead of using cling wrap; 7 = washing and re-using empty containers. One sentence earns only one of them. Copyright reserved Please turn over
English First Additional Language/P1 6 Senior Phase – Marking Guidelines Hlayiso/Mock 2026 • Do not award a mark for the general statements in the first and last paragraphs (e.g. ‘recycling is good’). • Do not penalise the candidate if there is no word count, but verify the number of words. If the summary is longer than 70 words, read up to the end of the sentence in which the 70th word appears and ignore the rest. • Candidates who quote directly may be awarded the content mark, but their language mark should reflect that they did not use their own words. 1 MARK 2 MARKS 3 MARKS Poor grammar and sentence construction.
