Downloaded from hlayiso.com GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF ANA EXEMPLARS 1. How to use the exemplars While the exemplars for a grade and a subject have been compiled into one comprehensive set, the learner does not have to respond to the whole set in one sitting. The teacher should select exemplar questions that are relevant to the planned lesson at any given time. Carefully selected individual exemplar test questions, or a manageable group of questions, can be used at different stages of the teaching and learning process as follows: 1.1 At the beginning of a lesson as a diagnostic test to identify learner strengths and weaknesses. The diagnosis must lead to prompt feedback to learners and the development of appropriate lessons that address the identified weaknesses and consolidate the strengths. The diagnostic test could be given as homework to save instructional time in class. 1.2 During the lesson as short formative tests to assess whether learners are developing the intended knowledge and skills as the lesson progresses and ensure that no learner is left behind. 1.3 At the completion of a lesson or series of lessons as a summative test to assess if the learners have gained adequate understanding and can apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the completed lesson(s). Feedback to learners must be given promptly while the teacher decides on whether there are areas of the lesson(s) that need to be revisited to consolidate particular knowledge and skills. 1.4 At all stages to expose learners to different techniques of assessing or questioning, e.g. how to answer multiple-choice (MC) questions, open-ended (OE) or free-response (FR) questions, short-answer questions, etc. While diagnostic and formative tests may be shorter in terms of the number of questions included, the summative test will include relatively more questions, depending on the work that has been covered at a particular point in time. It is important to ensure that learners eventually get sufficient practice in responding to the exemplar. 2. Memoranda or marking guidelines A typical example of the expected responses (marking guidelines) has been given for each exemplar test question and for the ANA model test. Teachers must bear in mind that the marking guidelines can in no way be exhaustive. They can only provide broad principles of expected responses and teachers must interrogate and reward acceptable options and variations of the acceptable response(s) given by learners. 3. Curriculum coverage It is extremely critical that the curriculum must be covered in full in every class. The exemplars for each grade and subject do not represent the entire curriculum. They merely sample important knowledge and skills and covers work relating to terms 1, 2 and 3 of the school year. 1 Grade 9 English FAL Exemplar

Instead of answering her, he slipped deeper into the tall reeds behind his house, where he and I hid. He said, “Tony, I don’t want to go.” Let me explain what had happened earlier … 2. After breakfast, Jason and his mom had gone to town to shop for gifts for his sister, Megan, because it was her birthday. As they drove to town, Jason couldn’t help but ask the question that had been on his mind. “What’s in the big box that Dad took to the garage, Mom? Is it something Aunt Nancy bought for Megan’s birthday?” 3. “It’s a surprise, Jason, and I don’t want you to go near that garage,” said Mom. Jason sat staring at the road ahead. He was more curious than ever before! 4. Jason’s thoughts kept returning to the box in the garage so we went to have a look. As we approached the box, we could hear loud wailing. Leaning over, Jason carefully lifted the lid. There was the cuddliest puppy we had ever seen! Jason secretly wished the puppy was for him. 5. Jason had forgotten that he wasn’t supposed to be in the garage. We started playing happily with the puppy, but then it ran off as fast as it could out of the garage and into a field! We stumbled out of the garage, looking wildly for any trace of the puppy. We looked everywhere, but the puppy was gone! We were so scared that we decided to hide. 6. Jason and I had been hiding in the reeds for two hours when we heard Jason’s mom calling out for him. “Jason! It’s time for dinner!” We still didn’t move from our hiding place. 7. Just when we were determined to stay in the tall reeds forever, we heard his sister’s voice. “Jason, it’s time for my party,” yelled Megan excitedly. I ran home while Jason walked slowly towards the house, trying to appear normal. 8. When it was time to open Megan’s gifts, he sat in the big easy chair, hoping no one would notice him. “I’ll be right back,” Dad said. Jason saw his dad going to the garage. “Jason! Come here,” called his dad. Jason slowly got out of the chair. It was hard for him to move. There was Dad, standing with the box. “Jason, I want you to open this box and see what’s inside.” Jason looked up and saw that Dad was smiling. He turned and saw that Mom, Aunt Nancy, and Megan were smiling, too. What would he say to them when there was nothing in the box? 9.
