UNOFFICIAL Mathematical Literacy/P1 2 NSC – Unofficial Marking Guidelines Hlayiso/November 2026 IMPORTANT: These are unofficial marking guidelines prepared by Hlayiso for revision. They are not the DBE’s official memorandum; the official marking guidelines may differ in mark allocation and accepted alternatives. SYMBOL AND EXPLANATION Symbol Explanation Symbol Explanation M Method A Accuracy MA Method with accuracy CA Consistent accuracy C Conversion D Definition F Choosing the correct formula SF Substitution in a formula J Justification O Opinion/Reason/Example P Penalty (e.g. no units, incorrect rounding) R Rounding RT/RG/RM Reading from a table/graph/map S Simplification NOTE: • If a candidate answers a question TWICE, only mark the FIRST attempt. • If a candidate has crossed out an attempt of a question and not redone the question, mark the crossed-out version. • Consistent accuracy (CA) applies in ALL aspects of the marking guidelines. Stop marking at the second calculation error in the same item. • Answers only, without working, are awarded full marks unless stated otherwise in the row. For “show that” and “verify” items, the working must be shown. • Units: penalise missing or incorrect units (R, KES, NZD, GB, m3, %) ONCE per question (1P), not per item, unless the unit is the mark being tested. • Rounding: penalise incorrect rounding ONCE per question (1P). Money is rounded to TWO decimal places; counts of people/days/households to whole numbers. • A justification (J) mark is awarded only if it follows from the candidate’s own (correct or CA) calculations. • Accept a full stop or a comma as the decimal sign and either a space or no separator for thousands. Most of that comes from core skills that are tested every year (percentages, tables, mean/median/IQR, verify items), so the figure flatters the prediction: most of our specific contexts did not appear. What we got right • The Q1 terminology-matching table (letters A–H), set in exactly our format. • The stepped water tariff (5.3), almost the same as our 4.2.5. • Cost graphs in the answer book: complete a graph, then read where two graphs meet (our break-even item). • Heavy “Verify, showing ALL calculations” weighting: four items (23 marks), as forecast (about 21). • Statistics (median, IQR = Q3 −Q1, mean to 2 d.p.), probability, exchange rates, VAT, ratio, numbers in words, discrete data, and the Special Answer Book. What we missed • Our most confident call, SA annual income tax (18 marks in our paper), did not appear; only 3 marks used a Kenyan monthly table. • Hire purchase, the box-and-whisker plot and inflation-linked fees did not appear either: about 45 of our 150 marks went to topics that were not set. • Pie charts (which we left out) and a company statement of financial performance. • Compound interest with two rates and a part year (8 marks), a cross-rate via USD, and MB/GB/TB conversions. Rating: 7/10. Almost every skill was practised and the matching, tariff, graph and verify calls landed, but our biggest call (SA income tax) failed and none of the main contexts matched.
