2 QUESTION 1: COMPREHENSION (15 MARKS) Read the questions first, then the passage. Thereafter, answer the questions The Mystery Arrival of the Antarctic Seal in South Africa 1 On the 28th of January 2021, the SPCA discovered an injured Crabeater seal resting on a beach in KwaZulu Natal. What made this discovery so surprising was that Crabeater seals normally live along the coast of Antarctica. This was the third time in the last 40 years that one had been spotted on the coast of KwaZulu Natal. 2 The SPCA members caught the seal and took him to uShaka Marine World for treatment. Catching him was easy as animals that live in Antarctica have not developed a fear of humans. 3 The seal was admitted to a rehabilitation pool to rest. The staff named him “Ragnar” after a legendary Viking who had travelled around the world. 4 Looking after Ragnar proved to be quite tricky because, contrary to their name, Crabeater seals don’t eat crabs, but feed off krill. At first, Ragnar refused to eat fish but then the team discovered that he preferred prawns, the larger cousin of the krill. 5 The rehabilitation team also introduced ice blocks into his area. Ragnar enjoyed resting on the ice. As Ragnar’s strength returned, he began keeping an eye out for the cooler box, which meant that food was on its way. This worried the staff as they did not want Ragnar to start relying on people feeding him. 6 Soon Ragnar was strong enough to start his trip back to Antarctica. Ragnar was taken by boat out to the Agulhas current. It was hoped that he would be able to ride the current to get back to Antarctica. Source: www.Twinkl.com Word count: 250 words
