Technology 8 Senior Phase Mock Hlayiso/Mock 2026 SECTION C: GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION AND DESIGN QUESTION 3 Read the scenario below and answer the questions that follow. SCENARIO Learners at Sizwe Secondary School keep their cellphones on their desks while they work on projects in the Technology room. The phones often fall to the floor and the screens crack. The Technology teacher asked the Grade 8 class to design a simple wooden block that can stand on a desk, with a channel (slot) in which a phone in a thick protective case or a small tablet can stand upright, leaning against the inside wall. The block must be made from one piece of pine. 3.1 Write a design brief for the phone holder. (2) 3.2 List THREE specifications for the phone holder. (3) 3.3 The three views of the phone holder that one learner designed are shown below in first-angle orthographic projection (not to scale, all dimensions in mm). Name the views labelled 1, 2 and 3. (3) 1 2 3 100 60 40 30 60 3.4 Use the views in QUESTION 3.3 to draw an isometric drawing of the phone holder on the isometric grid on ANNEXURE A. Use a scale of 1 : 1 (one grid space = 10 mm). Start at point P that is marked on the grid. Point P is the lowest front corner. Draw the 100 mm length (the U-shaped face) along the 30◦line to the RIGHT of P and the 60 mm depth along the 30◦line to the LEFT of P. Hidden detail and dimensions are NOT required. Technology 9 Senior Phase Mock Hlayiso/Mock 2026 3.5 Another learner designed the T-shaped tablet stand shown below (isometric drawing, not to scale, all dimensions in mm; the 30 mm stem is in the centre). On the square grid on ANNEXURE B, draw the FRONT VIEW and the TOP VIEW of the stand in first-angle orthographic projection to a scale of 1 : 1 (one square = 5 mm). Show the hidden detail in the top view. Dimensions are NOT required. (7) 80 40 15 50 30 FRONT [25] TOTAL SECTION C: 25 Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technology 10 Senior Phase Mock Hlayiso/Mock 2026 SECTION D: MECHANICAL SYSTEMS AND CONTROL QUESTION 4 4.1 The diagram below shows a wheelbarrow that carries a load of bricks of 600 N. The wheel axle is the fulcrum. The load is 0,4 m from the fulcrum, and the effort is applied at the handles, 1,2 m from the fulcrum. (The diagram is not drawn to scale.) load 600 N effort 0,4 m 1,2 m fulcrum (axle) 4.1.1 Identify the class of lever of the wheelbarrow. Give a reason for your answer. (2) 4.1.2 Use the principle of moments (load × load distance = effort × effort distance) to calculate the effort needed to lift the handles. (3) 4.1.3 Calculate the mechanical advantage of the wheelbarrow. (2) Copyright reserved Please turn over
Technology 11 Senior Phase Mock Hlayiso/Mock 2026 4.2 The diagram below shows two spur gears inside a hand drill. The handle turns gear A (40 teeth) at 60 revolutions per minute (r/min) in a clockwise direction. Gear A drives gear B (10 teeth), which turns the drill bit. A: 40 teeth (driver) B: 10 teeth 60 r/min 4.2.1 Calculate the gear ratio between gear A and gear B. Use the formula: gear ratio = number of teeth on the driven gear number of teeth on the driver gear (2) 4.2.2 Calculate the speed of gear B in r/min. (2) 4.2.3 In which direction will gear B turn? (1) 4.2.4 Is this gear system designed to increase SPEED or to increase FORCE? (1) 4.2.5 Name the gear that must be placed between gear A and gear B so that both gears turn in the same direction. (1) 4.3 In a hand-held egg beater, the handle turns in a vertical plane, but the beaters spin in a horizontal plane. 4.3.1 Name the type of gears used in the egg beater. Technology 14 Senior Phase Mock Hlayiso/Mock 2026 SECTION F: IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY QUESTION 6 Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow. Power for Siyakhula Park Many families in the informal settlement of Siyakhula Park (a fictional community) do not have legal electricity connections. Some residents connect thin wires to the municipal power lines themselves and run these wires across the ground to their homes. Last winter, a child was badly shocked by a bare wire lying in a puddle, and two shacks burnt down after a short circuit. The transformer that supplies the area often overloads and explodes, so the whole community, including the clinic, is left without power for days. Most of South Africa’s electricity is generated in coal-fired power stations. The municipality now plans to install solar panels on the roofs of new houses in Siyakhula Park. [Examiner’s own case study.] 6.1 Give TWO dangers of illegal electricity connections mentioned in the case study. (2) 6.2 Explain what a short circuit is. (1) 6.3 Give TWO negative impacts of coal-fired power stations on the environment. (2) 6.4 Give TWO advantages of using solar panels to supply electricity to the houses.
