Each question has only ONE correct answer. Write only the letter (A – D) next to the question number (1.1. – 1.3.) on your answer page. 1.1 Which of the following is NOT an example of a beneficial interaction? A. A bee pollinating a flower B. A tick-eating bird sitting on an impala’s back C. Insects eating the leaves of plants (2) D. Birds eat fruit and disperse the seeds of plants 1.2 Choose the correct products of cellular respiration: A. Glucose + oxygen + energy B. Glucose + carbon dioxide C. Carbon dioxide + water + energy D. Oxygen + water + energy (2) 1
Downloaded from hlayiso.com 1.3 The type of energy stored in food is: A. Kinetic energy B. Potential energy C. Light energy D. None of the above (2) (3x2) [6] QUESTION 2: One-Word Items Give ONE word / term for each of the following descriptions. Write only the word / term next to the question number (2.1 – 2.5) on your answer page. 2.1 Organisms that can make their own food. 2.2 The source of energy in an ecosystem. 2.3 The light trapping pigment in a plant cell that gives a plant its green colour. 2.4 The solution used to test for the presence of starch in a leaf. 2.5 A relationship where both parties depend on each other for something. (1x5) [5] SECTION A SUB-TOTAL: 11 MARKS SECTION B QUESTION 3: The diagram below shows the equation for the process of photosynthesis. Sunlight A + B Chlorophyl C + D l 2

(1) 3.3 Name two substances that the main product of (4) photosynthesis will be converted into in a plant. Give the function of both of these substances. 3.4 How is the process of photosynthesis related to the process (2) of cellular respiration? 3.5 Use your knowledge of the test for the presence of starch in leaves and the diagram below to answer the following questions. 3.5. Why was the leaf boiled in water? (1) 1 3
Downloaded from hlayiso.com 3.5. Why is the leaf boiled in ethanol/alcohol? (1) 2 3.5. What colour change will show that starch is present in (1) 3 the leaf? [14] QUESTION 4: 4.1 Describe a test for a by-product of cellular respiration. (3) 4.2 What is the main product of cellular respiration? (1) [4] QUESTION 5: Susan wanted to test how time affects the rate of cellular respiration using the experimental set up shown below. Susan added yeast cells to water, and then she added 20g of sugar. She attached a balloon onto the top of the bottle and ensured it was sealed. She measured the diameter of the balloon immediately and let her experiment stand. Susan proceeded to measure her balloon every 15 minutes for 2 hours and her results are represented below. She determined the rate of cellular respiration by measuring the circumference of the balloon. Susan’s results are show in Table 1. Table 1: Table showing the circumference of a balloon after 2 hours of measurements 4
